Today we operated from the Kansas City Zoo for Antarctic Activity Week!

We operated roughly from 10am-2pm and had 27 contacts on the 20m. and 15m. bands from Utah, AZ, Florida, B.C., D.C., Alabama, Georgia, NY, Wyoming, and our club founder’s favorite, Italy.

We made contact with I1HYW—Gianni. Gianni is one of the organizers and web manager for the Worldwide Antarctic Program and the Antarctic Activity Week! We ran the IC-7000 at 100 watts to a 30’ end fed piece of lamp cord, using a 9:1 UNUM, with the wire thrown over a nearby tree. We ran battery power.

One visitor told of his personal experience working on radar equipment in Antarctica several years ago. At least a couple visitors wanted to know about licensing for ham radio. We referred them to hamclass.org. Beautiful weather for the outing today. Clear sky, lots of sunshine. High 40’s to low 50’s by the time we pulled up stakes. Fun time.

Special thank you to the Kansas City Zoo!

Operating today from the zoo: KB0MZF, KB0USC, KD0EWF, KD0MSU

We have a few of our members planning to operate for Antarctic Activity Week remotely from the Kansas City Zoo this Saturday, 25 February 2023. We will meet for breakfast at the Big Biscuit at the corner of 135th and Mur-Len in Olathe at 7:30AM and assess the weather conditions and our hardiness. Although we are celebrating the amazing work of the international scientific community under some of the most difficult conditions on the planet, we are not quite so hardy. If we can operate, we should be listening and transmitting on HF (wherever the band is working) with a phone and a digital/CW station running. We will be set up just outside the entrance to the Zoo. We like operating from the Zoo and also reminding people to check out the penguin exhibit there. Hope we can work you on the air this Saturday. Listen for KØANT using the Worldwide Antarctic Program designator WAP-198 as we work the AAW event. (See www.waponline.it for more details on the AAW.) 73

On February 17, 2022, Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star set a new world record as it reached the southernmost navigable waters on Earth at a position of 78 degrees, 44 minutes, 1.32 seconds south latitude at 12:55 p.m. New Zealand time. This position is approximately 500 yards from the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf. Russia’s Spirit of Enderby held the previous record. Excitement aboard Polar Star grew once it was confirmed that the record had been broken. The cutter was there to support Operation Deep Freeze, an annual mission to resupply American scientists. This photo shows the vessel on the frozen Ross Sea about a month prior to the record being set. (U.S. Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer 3rd Class Diolanda Caballero)

Something to ponder as we are thinking about Antarctic Activity Week.

Crean and Lashly marched on with their patient in tow but were forced to stop once again on 17th February. They were almost spent; yet, having hauled Evans on the sledge for 38 miles, their mental resolve remained high as Lashly remarked:
“We are pretty tired tonight. I don’t think we have got the go in us as we had but we must try and push on.”

By now, the worsening conditions of the viciously cold Antarctic blizzards put paid to any further progress. They set up camp for the night just a mile away from Corner Camp. They were 35 miles short of Hut Point, their destination and place of safety.

On the morning of 18th February, after a night through which his protective companions kept a careful watch on him, Evans fainted. Crean and Lashly rushed to his aid and Crean, thinking his commander had died, cradled him in his arms.
Evans later recalled: “His hot tears fell on my face and, as I came to, I gave a weak kind of laugh.”
It was futile to think they could continue as they comforted their critically ill patient.

It appeared Evans’ quest for life was now nearing an end. The only option left was for one of the men to set out for Hut Point while the other remained in the tent and tended to Evans.

On what appeared a fine day, Crean volunteered and, with two biscuits and a stick of chocolate to fuel his march for life, he set forth on a mission that would see his journey enter the annals of history.

William Lashly’s role now was to nurse Evans and keep him alive in the hope that Crean would make it but the omens did not look good for that outcome.

Can't wait to hear everyone checking into the Club Net tomorrow night.

01/22/2023

The Kansas Antenna Club in Johnson County is excited to announce that our weekly Club Net is back! The Net will be conducted on Thursday evenings, 1900 hrs. local time, on the 145.47 MHz KØECS repeater, located in Olathe, KS. This repeater uses a minus offset and 151.4 Hz PL tone. Our Net uses the Club call sign KØANT. Our first Net evening will be this week, January 26, 2023 at 1900 CST.

We hope that you will enjoy making connections during our Club Net, and that you will participate regularly. All licensed amateur radio operators are invited to check into the Net. You do not need to be a Member of the Kansas Antenna Club in Johnson County in order to check into the Net and participate. Please help spread the word, and invite your other HAM friends to also participate in the Net.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Johnson County Emergency Communications Service, Inc. (“ECS”) and KØECS for use of the ECS repeater for our Club Net. ECS is the appointed R.A.C.E.S. (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service) volunteer organization for the Johnson County Emergency Management Division. ECS trains and certifies local amateur radio operators to serve as official storm spotters during sever weather events, and to be available for other community emergencies. We encourage amateur radio operators in the community to consider volunteering and helping ECS with its mission. More information about ECS can be found at www.K0ECS.org.

We look forward to hearing you on this week’s Club Net.
