Remembering Dolly Parton and the Imagination Library: A Legacy of Literacy

Yesterday marked the loss of a truly remarkable figure, whose impact on childhood literacy spans over three decades and touches millions worldwide. Dolly Parton, beyond her extraordinary career as a cultural icon, devoted 31 years to fostering a love of reading through her visionary project—the Imagination Library. This initiative has provided books to over 3,197,000 children globally and distributed an astonishing 332,411,218 books to kids from birth through age five, establishing it as the largest reading program in the world.

Parton's motivation for the Imagination Library was deeply personal, rooted in the struggles of her own family. Her father, unable to learn to read or write, inspired her commitment to make books accessible to young children regardless of their background. By offering free books at a critical stage of development, the program empowers families to nurture early literacy, ignite imagination, and lay the foundations for lifelong learning.

The Imagination Library operates with elegant simplicity: every registered child receives a carefully selected, age-appropriate book by mail every month. This consistent exposure to reading materials helps build vocabulary, cognitive skills, and emotional awareness. It also bridges gaps caused by economic hardship, showing that access to books is not a privilege but a right. Dolly's humanitarian generosity transcended the entertainment world—she created a global movement dedicated to children's intellectual and creative growth.

As members of the OPHS Book Club, we honor Dolly Parton's extraordinary contribution to literacy and to the joy of reading. Her legacy endures every time a child opens a new book, ventures into stories, and dreams without limits. In her memory, we encourage young readers everywhere to embrace the power of imagination, for it soars as high as the star that Dolly shines among us today.

An important part of OPHS's curriculum is getting our history out to the public. Brad Moore, Executive Director, made a presentation to the residents of Brookdale Overland Park 119th. They were engaged, and they laughed at Brad's jokes...what more could we ask? If anyone knows of a group or organization that would be interested in learning about the founding of this great city, please contact Brad Moore at [email protected].

We learned a bit of trivia today as The Clocktower Landing sign has a bit of history embedded in the new sign. The Clocktower graphic is set to 6:05 to commemorate the dates for the very first farmers' market and the opening of the new market. It was June 6 that the first market opened. The Downtown Overland Park Business Association started the market. It was initiated for county farmers to sell their produce. OPHS member Suzee Oberg was on that committe to start the market. Today, it is a jewel to the Downtown area. History matters!
