A new school year means a new season of Read Across SMSD!

Season 6 kicks off with a message that feels especially fitting: Stand Together. Superintendent Dr. Michael Schumacher joined students at John Diemer Elementary to introduce this year’s featured book, We the People Is All the People by Howard W. Reeves.

The Shawnee Mission Education Foundation is proud to support this celebration of reading alongside NEA-Shawnee Mission. Through the Foundation’s support, every Shawnee Mission School District school library receives the featured Read Across SMSD books.

Here’s to another year of great books, big ideas and ONE Shawnee Mission!

Congratulations to our Staff Art Show winner!

We are thrilled to celebrate Steph Kates, a teacher at Shawnee Mission Northwest, whose artwork “Grandma’s House” has been selected as the winning piece in this year’s Shawnee Mission School District Staff Art Show.

Ms. Kates will receive $250 in personal recognition, along with a $250 grant for the art department at Shawnee Mission Northwest. Her beautiful work will also become part of the district’s permanent staff art collection and be featured in the district's permanent gallery.

We’re proud to celebrate the incredible creativity and talent of our staff members. Congratulations, Ms. Kates, on this wonderful achievement!

What a morning! The 2026 Fall Breakfast was one for the books.

From inspiring student hosts and powerful stories to big conversations about the future of the Shawnee Mission School District we spent the morning celebrating what happens when a community comes together to support public education.

One of the biggest highlights was the launch of InspirED Shawnee Mission, a new Shawnee Mission Education Foundation program made possible through the generosity of the late Sally Shipley, a longtime Shawnee Mission West teacher who dedicated more than 30 years to her students. Sally was the kind of teacher who inspired students to discover what they were capable of. Among those students? Actors Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis.

Now, Sally’s generosity will help inspire the next generation of teachers. Each year, InspirED Shawnee Mission will support five Shawnee Mission School District seniors pursuing careers in education, with scholarships, college support and mentorship, with the goal of bringing these future educators back to Shawnee Mission classrooms. That is a legacy worth celebrating.

And we can’t say thank you enough to our incredible Fall Breakfast sponsors. Your generosity makes mornings like this possible and helps the Foundation continue Building Tomorrow Together for more than 27,000 Shawnee Mission students.

To everyone who joined us, filled a table, cheered on our students and helped make the morning so special: thank you.

This morning, Shawnee Mission high school students got a closer look at what their future could hold.

Students connected with local businesses and professionals, explored career options and asked questions about what comes next.

Thank you to the businesses and community partners who spent the morning investing in our students and helping them see what’s possible beyond the classroom. A special thanks to members of our Corporate Council that were able to join us: HCA Midwest Health, Higgins Group, Inc., Hollis + Miller Architects, INVISION planning I architecture I interiors, JE Dunn Construction, McCownGordon Construction, Newkirk Novak Construction Partners, Overland Park Chamber of Commerce, Performance Services, and Synetic Technologies.
