In the town of Darat Izza, Ihab Rashid and his wife, Asmaa Haboush, struggle to provide for their two children. Ihab, a 29-year-old driver, earns no more than 3 dollars a day, while Asmaa, cares for their home and children—a 3 year old son and their newborn, Taym.
Taym’s birth at Al-Fardous Hospital, operated by the SRD with support from the Syria Cross-Border Humanitarian Fund (SCHF), was a moment of happiness. Asmaa recalls, “I felt safe from the moment I arrived. My child was examined and placed in an incubator for two hours before I took him home.”
However, their joy quickly turned to fear. Just 4 days later, Taym struggled to breathe, his skin turned blue, and he could no longer breastfeed. The family rushed him back to the hospital, where the medical team took immediate action.
The pediatrician explained, “We discovered a severe respiratory issue that required urgent intervention. Taym was placed in the intensive care unit (ICU) on a ventilator. After further examination, we confirmed he had severe laryngeal fibrosis, which led to pneumonia.”
For days, Taym received intensive care, including medications, oxygen support, and close monitoring. Asmaa recalls, “I was terrified, but I trusted the doctors. Having access to free healthcare was a blessing because we could not afford treatment.”
After a week, Taym’s condition improved, he was discharged in good health. Asmaa describes the moment: “It felt like my child had been given a second chance. The hospital’s support was a lifeline for us.”
Since 2016, Al-Fardous Hospital has provided critical medical care to mothers and children in western Aleppo. The hospital operates 24/7, offering services such as outpatient clinics, emergency care, incubators, and intensive care. The hospital’s program manager states, “Every recovery is a success story. Our specialized care for mothers and children shows our commitment to the community.”
