Don’t forget!!

It's the final week of the 2026 Kansas Legislative Session and our last week to stop a number of concerning bills that have landed on the Governor's Desk. Take action this week by:

✅ encouraging the Governor to veto bills
✅ watching for action alerts to contact legislators once we know which bills have been vetoed; we'll need them to vote to sustain the vetoes

Thank you to Sen. Corson, Sen. Holscher, Sen. Warren, Rep. Poskin and Rep. Clayton, and SMSD BOE VP/South area representative, Jessica Hembree for joining us last night for our PTA Legislative Panel where we discussed everything public education. We appreciate all of the Diemer and area school families that were able to join the conversation and stay informed!

Last Friday, your legislators passed 88 bills in a single day — a record-breaking moment that will have real impacts on our schools and our kids. They could pass the K-12 education budget this week- the single most impactful bill on our schools!
Now is your chance to hear directly from the people making these decisions. Our community PTAs have invited your state legislators to meet with you in an informal and comfortable setting!

Join us tomorrow (Tuesday, 3/31) at 7:00 p.m. at Indian Woods Middle School for an important and engaging community event where legislators will walk us through which of these new laws affect our schools, our district, and our children.

This isn’t just a presentation — it’s a conversation. You’ll have plenty of informal time to ask questions, share your concerns, and speak one-on-one with your elected officials and other parents about what matters most to you.

Why you should come:

-Get clear, local insight on new legislation impacting our schools
-Hear from TWO candidates for governor ahead of next November’s election- Learn why the governor plays a critical role in school funding in Kansas
-Meet with both Democratic and Republican state senators
-Understand how the new cell phone bill, among others, could affect our students and district
-We’ll also hear from Jessica Hembree, South area SMSD board member and vice president, who will share what these changes could mean specifically for our district.

This is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to stay informed and make your voice heard.

Show up. Stay informed. Be part of the conversation.

We organized this meeting in partnership with Trailwood, John Diemer, Brookwood and Indian Woods PTAs. It would be great to get a big showing from parents - hope to see you there! 🙂

We've reached the final budget negotiation stage of the 2026 legislative session. NOW is the time for all Kansans to reach out to lawmakers in Topeka.

Use this link (https://win.newmode.net/smacpta/fullyfundspecialeducation) to urge budget committee members to fund SpEd and reduce the pressure on property taxes before school districts are forced to make tough budget decisions.

The underfunding of SpEd is eroding general education budgets and putting pressure on local property taxes as school districts must use their local option budgets to cover the shortfall that legislators continue to ignore.

The budget committee has currently agreed to a $6 million increase for special education; far short of the $145M requested by the State Board of Education and the $25M needed to fund at current levels.

For SMSD, $1,400 of the per student base state aid of $5,378 is being redirected from general education to close the SpEd funding gap. It's time for the state to fund their fair (and mandated) share.

Quick link to email the budget committee all at once, please take one minute to send! https://win.newmode.net/smacpta/fu...
