Foundation Family Spotlight: The Todd Clauer Fund for Education & Justice, established in memory of beloved long-time Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy (HBHA) teacher and administrator Todd Clauer. “I knew I wanted to do something special to honor Todd's legacy at HBHA," said David Sosland, HBHA parent and former board chairperson. "Members of HBHA's Executive Committee began brainstorming what would be a fitting way to honor Todd’s memory. We discussed the areas in which Todd was most passionate - social justice, civil rights, Israel, the environment and sustainability. I spoke with his wife, Mirra, to make sure we were on the right track. Not long after that discussion, some of Todd’s close friends began calling me, asking what the school was planning to do in Todd’s memory. After several conversations, we decided to begin raising money for a ‘living fund’ to continue Todd’s work. The JCF staff was very helpful getting the fund up and running. We were able to structure the fund so that Todd’s family could have input on funding opportunities while still allowing HBHA‘s leadership control over the ultimate decision. It’s our earnest hope that as long as there’s a Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, there will be a Todd Clauer Fund for Education and Justice helping perpetuate Todd’s deep impact on the school.”

Thank you to SAVE, Inc. and Martha Gershun for hosting our Connecting Our Giving Community site visit today. SAVE, Inc. offers permanent, transitional, and emergency housing services to those with HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, mental health illnesses, and more. Our group toured two of SAVE, Inc.'s properties: Cropsey Place, which provides permanent supportive housing, and Teresa's Place, a drop-in overnight emergency shelter serving LGBTQIA+ youth. We were moved by the passion of the SAVE, Inc. team and their dedication to providing accessible shelter and comprehensive care for vulnerable people facing homelessness in our community. We're so grateful for the opportunity to learn about and support SAVE, Inc.'s inspiring work.

Foundation Family Spotlight: Shannon & Joshua Maker - "For us, philanthropy isn’t just a fancy word for charitable giving - it’s part of what it means to be Jewish. Our community has always relied on itself, supported itself, and invested in itself. Having our Donor Advised Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation reinforces that connection and allows us to actively model those values for our children."

At the Foundation, tikkun olam (repairing the world) is not only a sacred value, it's a call to action. Every grant we facilitate, every fund we steward, and every donor we partner with is part of that essential work of making our community, and world, a better place.

Today marks one year since Sarah Milgrim, a beloved member of our Kansas City Jewish community, and her partner, Yaron Lischinsky, were murdered outside the Capital Jewish Museum. In the face of these devastating losses, our community is moved to carry forward Sarah’s legacy of compassion, purpose and peace. Sarah's family has established The Sarah Milgrim Fund to honor Sarah's inspiring dedication to repairing the world. Foundation Family Spotlight: Marjie & Jeff Wongs - “Having a JCF Donor Advised Fund has given our family a meaningful way to turn our values into action. Even though we’re still early in our philanthropic journey, opening our fund felt like the first real step toward shaping the kind of legacy we want to build for our children. Through J-LEAD, we saw how collective giving can create real impact, and our DAF lets us bring that same spirit into our home. For us, our fund is a simple but important way to start building the legacy we hope to pass on.” See more in our new Annual Report: https://jcfkcorg.yearly.report/2025-annual-report
