Do these early 20th century sneakers look familiar?
While female tennis players preparing for the 2024 Paris Olympics today might be wearing sleeveless tops and short skirts, in 1924, they would have worn a white mid-calf dress with sneakers like these Keds.
In 1916, the US Rubber Company introduced Keds, the first popular tennis shoe. These original Keds resemble Edwardian women's footwear with their boot-like silhouette but deliver comfort on the court with their canvas uppers and grippy rubber soles. At the turn of the 20th century, women began to participate in sports such as cycling, golf, and tennis that required clothing that allowed more mobility.
Cycling skirts, "sport" corsets, and tennis shoes like these represented the emerging ideal of the active, independent woman and evolved into the sportswear that women wear every day today.

Have you ever thought you could see human face when you looked at a full moon?
This late 18th century button turned pin is carved with a “man in the moon” face like one you might think you see. People who see a “man in the moon” face smiling down on us are seeing the dark splotches on the moon surface and interpreting them as a face.
Today is National Moon Day which celebrates the July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 mission in which Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin really were men on the moon surface.

Lula Barber, Meta Kres, and Meda Montana Brendall, outside the welding shop at the Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyards in Baltimore, Maryland. Brendall is among the women featured in the Library's "Women at War" Veterans History Project collection.

Chosen from among the thousands of collections of women’s experiences in the Veterans History Project, this modest selection spans four wars. Many of the collections are nurses’ tales, but there is also the story of a code breaker (Ann Caracristi), a welder (Brendall), and a flight surgeon (Rhonda Cornum), plus two women who rose through the ranks to secure places in the military history books.
