Enlisting in the US Army in 1967 and arrived in Vietnam in January of 1969, Chris Crowley volunteered to fly unarmed helicopters in Vietnam. Conducting one of the most dangerous missions in the war, Chris, his fellow pilots, and their crews were the lifeline for wounded US military members, South Vietnamese soldiers, and even enemy combatants. Chris flew over a thousand missions, rescuing over 3000 wounded.

"It was the best year of my life, and it changed all of us. Everyone who flew Dustoff that I know of, it was the defining moment of their lives." -Chris Crowley

A member of the US Army in WWII, Bill served in the largely unknown tank destroyer battalions in Europe. With his M-18 Hellcat crew, Bill fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and throughout the Germany campaign. Following the battle to take Hanover, Germany, he had his first encounter with the concentration camps, recalling the smell of the local camp as an overwhelming experience. Bill was awarded the French Legion of Honor Medal by French President Macron in Normandy on June 6 2024, the 80th anniversary of
D-Day.

“It was something that had to be done. As simple as that. We all knew that." -Bill Casassa

Say thank you to heroes like Bill and others.

A member of the US Navy in WWII, Ray was stationed aboard the Navy Destroyer/Minesweeper USS Macomb. He took part in the capture and sinking of German U-Boat 616 in Europe, then was sent to the Pacific to fight in the battle of Okinawa. While there, his ship sank multiple Japanese Kamikaze attacks and was struck by one, killing Ray’s close friend. Ray then proudly witnessed the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay.

“Anybody aboard ship gets credit for whatever happens. You’re one little cog in the big wheel of war.” - Ray Shockley

After deployment as an advisor to South America, he served during three deployments to Afghanistan where he was awarded the Silver Star for action in combat. Antonio retired a Sergeant Major after 28 years of service.

"Freedom is not free...the simple things that people take for granted, other people don't have. You go fight to liberate a country, or people, and lay your life, for people you don't even know." -Antonio Gonzales

A member of the British Royal Signal Corps in WWII, sixteen-year-old Sally Hatch took part in the collaborative cause of defeating tyranny and restoring freedom to the world. She fought in the Battle of Britain and survived being strafed by a German Heinkel Fighter/Bomber as she rode her bicycle. Sally’s American husband, Cal, also served, and her brother, Ernest, paid the ultimate price for freedom.

“All my friends, they were going into the service of some kind. I had to join the Army or do something for my King and country.” -Sally Keithley-McCulley

Don't miss hearing more from Sally at Service Stories: 80 Years of Valor on 2/23 at JCCC.
