On April 29, Hailey visited Ms. Kaup’s classroom at Cardinal High School to teach students about flowers and their parts!🌸

Students kicked off the lesson by testing their knowledge with labeling a flower worksheet. They also watched a flower dissection video preparing them for the second half of the lesson.

The highlight of the day was a hands-on dissection activity! Students worked in small groups to examine real flowers, generously donated by Petal - Flower Boutique —thank you for supporting agricultural education! To wrap up the lesson, students planted sunflower seeds in celebration of Mother’s Day.🌻

🐄🌽 Cardinal Elementary Ag Day!🚜

Cardinal FFA members hosted a great Ag Day on April 24th for K–5th grade students, featuring hands-on stations like live animals, drones, tractors, soil, and more! Students loved “milking” the faux cow with Outreach Coordinator, Hailey while learning about dairy products.🥛

Throughout April, Hailey Shultz shared an educational beef cattle video with students across Wapello County, featuring Wapello County Farm Bureau Vice President Alex Swanstrom. Hailey visited 16 classrooms of 2nd–4th grade students at Cardinal, Fahrney, Horace Mann, Eisenhower, and Ottumwa Christian Schools—reaching nearly 300 students!

Students got an inside look at Alex’s farm, meeting calves just days old with their mothers and learning about the different stages of life for beef cattle. Alex also explained what cattle eat, highlighting the role of corn silage, which students saw firsthand as it was fed to cattle owned by Farm Bureau board member Don Swanson.

To wrap up the lesson, students learned how beef goes from the farm to their table—including beef raised on Alex’s farm which is sold locally at Morgan’s Northgate Market in Ottumwa. A great way to connect agriculture to our local community!

The Wapello County Farm Bureau is proud to recognize Teagan Swearingen, a senior at Pekin High School, as one of this year’s Wapello County Farm Bureau Scholarship recipients. Teagan, the daughter of Michelle Swearingen, has demonstrated exceptional academic dedication, strong leadership abilities, and a deep commitment to agriculture and her community throughout her high school career.

Following graduation, Teagan plans to attend Indian Hills Community College to pursue a degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. During her time at Pekin High School, she has been actively involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including 4-H, cross country, track, and county council. She has also served in leadership roles within her 4-H club as both secretary and reporter.

Through her involvement in 4-H, Teagan showed pigs, gaining valuable experience working with animals and learning about the importance of agriculture. This hands-on experience taught her responsibility, proper animal care, and what judges look for in livestock shows. She has developed a strong appreciation for agriculture and enjoys learning about farming and observing how farmers care for their animals. After completing her college education, Teagan hopes to travel before eventually settling in Iowa. Growing up in Iowa has given her a deep understanding of agriculture and its vital role in our world today. She aspires to work in a hospital setting while continuing to give back by lending a helping hand to members of her community.

The Wapello County Farm Bureau congratulates Teagan on this well-deserved achievement and wishes her continued success in her educational pursuits and future career.

The Wapello County Farm Bureau is proud to recognize Carly Sloan, a senior at Cardinal High School, as one of this year’s Wapello County Farm Bureau Scholarship recipients. Carly is the daughter of Kevin and Tiffany Sloan and has demonstrated exceptional academic dedication, strong leadership abilities, and a deep commitment to agriculture and her community throughout her high school career.

Carly plans to attend Indian Hills Community College, where she will major in Dental Hygiene with a minor in Dental Assisting. During high school, she has been actively involved in numerous extracurricular activities, including volleyball, varsity wrestling and football cheerleading, FFA, FBLA, IJAG, National Honor Society, FCA, and Student Council. She has also taken on several leadership roles, serving as varsity football cheer caption, vice president and president of FBLA, vice president of service learning for IJAG, and reporter and president of FFA.

Carly is part of the eighth generation of her family farm, where she has experienced firsthand the pride that comes from working hard for others. Growing up on the farm has taught her the value of hard work and the importance of serving those around her rather than working solely for personal gain. These lessons have played a significant role in shaping her future goals. One of Carly’s main reasons for attending a local college is the opportunity to remain active on her family’s farming operation while continuing her education. She plans to begin with the one-year Dental Assisting program, which serves as a prerequisite for the Dental Hygiene program, where she will earn a two-year associate degree. After graduating, Carly plans to seek employment locally as a dental hygienist while continuing to work part-time on the family farm.

On April 23, Hailey visited Ms. Kaup’s classroom at Cardinal High School to talk with students about dairy cows and where dairy products come from. The lesson kicked off with a hands‑on activity—making homemade ice cream using half and half! Students enjoyed working together, sharing their ice cream, and adding their favorite toppings.

To wrap things up, students explored the milk processing cycle from the cow to the grocery store. Working in groups, they used puzzle pieces to put the six steps of milk processing in the correct order.🐄
