The Oswego Rotary Club’s tradition of showcasing our high school’s Top 25 in the downtown windows continues this year, although moving down one storefront to Man in the Moon. We can’t say enough about these students and wish them all the best as they graduate later this month and move onto the next stage of life. Congratulations! Many thanks to Amy Lear for offering her windows and to Sue Witmer for helping put the posters up. We invite all these students to stop down and we would love for the graduates to share their pictures with us.

Today marked the final official Interact Club meeting for the school year. What an absolutely wonderful group of students to work with, in some cases four years together isn’t enough and this is one of those times. The seniors will truly be missed. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors. Congratulations!

Murabito scholarship. And Brodie Wood received the Richard S. Shineman scholarship. Hannah Barbera received the Ruth N. Mulford Technical award. Four of the recipients are members of the High School Interact Club. We congratulate all the winners and know they will make Rotary proud.

It’s not every day, you can say one of your own is an author. But the Oswego Rotary Club can do just that! Valerie Hutchinson’s book titled Strength, Strudel and Song is her grandmother’s story. A story of a woman, Antoinette Sietmann, who was born in 1899 in Leoben, Austria and emigrated to New York City in 1918. There she married Albert Salzenburg, a butcher and fellow immigrant. The book is a story of their struggles and the challenges of the historical era in which they lived.
The book’s title reflects three important characteristics of Antoinette’s life. Her strength got her and her family through the difficulties and tragedies they faced. This determination got her from working as a maid and in a factory to eventually owning her own business in Saratoga NY.
Strudel represents her hospitality and her ability to bring and keep her family together. This ability is also reflected in the third word: song. Antoinette loved singing and music, as well as laughter and food, was a vital glue that held the family together.
For Valerie this story expands from one about her grandmother to one about immigrants and, beyond that, to all people. The book is written to illustrate the importance of family and mutual support. It is, however, also an inspiration for all who face struggles in their life.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and after one of our members heard about a clothing need at The Lobdell Center, she knew it would be the perfect project for Rotary. The Rotary Club bought clothes and the Oswego High School Interact Club made Inspirational Cards to be shared, because sometimes everyone needs a little reminder that they are important, and special and most of all loved.

Next Tuesday, voters will be asked to head to the polls to vote on the Oswego City School District’s 2026-2027 school budget. Unlike many districts, that are facing huge deficits, along with large tax levy increases to the public and countless staff members losing positions, Dr. Ray Kilmer, superintendent here in Oswego says, they tried very hard to keep the tax levy increases low. He says he and the board worked together, knowing families are already feeling the pinch in the pocketbooks, to keep the tax levy increase at a modest 2.9%. They did use some reserve funds in order to accomplish this. 18 positions will be lost through attrition, either by retirements or resignations. Two others will lose their jobs. However Kilmer says they will be able to maintain programming for all students. He says just like for everyone at home, the two biggest areas of cost increases for them are healthcare costs and utilities, whether it be the electricity costs or cost of gas for the buses. The overall school budget is just under $122 million. Along with the budget vote, there are a couple of propositions and three candidates vying for three seats on the board. Dr. Kilmer added, if anyone has any questions about the budget, to contact him before the vote next week.

The Oswego Rotary Club is honoring one of its own. Dr. Rick Tesoriero has achieved some few do within Rotary. He’s given 44 years of service to the club and was presented with a Paul Harris +7 pin this week. That means over the years, Dr. T has not only volunteered his own services, but has given monetarily as well. We can’t thank him enough for all of his service. Congratulations, Dr. T!

Once again this year, the Oswego Rotary Club is partnering with the Chamber’s Project Bloom to make the entrances to our city look prettier. Today, club members weeded and removed old dead flowers and plants to make way for the new to come in a couple of weeks. Be sure to look for these two gardens across from St. Luke’s as you enter the city on Route 481.
