Next Tuesday, voters will be asked to head to the polls to vote on the Oswego City School District’s 2026-2027 school budget. Unlike many districts, that are facing huge deficits, along with large tax levy increases to the public and countless staff members losing positions, Dr. Ray Kilmer, superintendent here in Oswego says, they tried very hard to keep the tax levy increases low. He says he and the board worked together, knowing families are already feeling the pinch in the pocketbooks, to keep the tax levy increase at a modest 2.9%. They did use some reserve funds in order to accomplish this. 18 positions will be lost through attrition, either by retirements or resignations. Two others will lose their jobs. However Kilmer says they will be able to maintain programming for all students. He says just like for everyone at home, the two biggest areas of cost increases for them are healthcare costs and utilities, whether it be the electricity costs or cost of gas for the buses. The overall school budget is just under $122 million. Along with the budget vote, there are a couple of propositions and three candidates vying for three seats on the board. Dr. Kilmer added, if anyone has any questions about the budget, to contact him before the vote next week.
