Ossining Fire Department Junior Corps.

Ossining Fire Department Junior Corps. The Venturing Crew is a Collaborative effort between the Boy Scouts of America and the Ossining Fire Department. We look forward to seeing you at our meeting!!

Ossining Fire Department Jr Corps is for members who live in the Ossining area between the ages of 14-18 who wish to gain knowledge in the basics of firefighting as well stimulate interest in the Volunteer Fire Service. The first meeting of the OFD Venturing Crew was held in November 1999 in the quarters of Holla Hose, Engine 100. The Venturing Crew, formerly known as an Explorer Post is open to b

oys and girls between the ages of 14 (and have graduated 8th grade) and 21 that reside in or attend school in the Village or Town of Ossining. The Crew members are led and trained by the members of the OFD in hopes that they will later become members of the Department. The OFD Venturing Crew currently consists of 15 members. Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month and trainings are held on the 4th Tuesday of every month at one of the nine firehouses in Ossining at 7:00pm. Meetings are run by members of the crew that have been elected to officer positions and are overseen by the Advisors. At our trainings, the host company trains the crew members on firefighting techniques including opening a hydrant, ladder safety, operating a hose line, CPR/First Aid training and much more. In addition to meetings and firematic trainings, we also participate in events such as the William E. Kelly Bowl-o-Ree through the Boy Scouts of America and a weekend of Camping, training and friendly competition at the Annual Lake Carmel Explorer weekend. This is a crew of Junior Firefighters in the Ossining Area and we are always looking for fresh new faces!

Tonight, the Ossining Junior Corps held their monthly training, focusing on water supply operations and hose line advancement. Members reviewed the fundamentals of establishing a water supply and had the opportunity to practice connecting to and operating from a hydrant.

The members then stretched a 1¾-inch hose line to simulate a real-world fire attack on incidents such as a vehicle fire or dumpster fire. Each member rotated through different hose line positions, including nozzle and backup, gaining hands-on experience and a better understanding of teamwork, communication, and proper hose handling.
Great work by all members as they continue building the skills and confidence needed to become the next generation of firefighters! Thank you for Monitor Hose Co. #4 for hosting this month’s training.

Due to the severe weather, it's been decided to cancel the Ossining Fire Department parade. Unfortunately Mother Nature doesn't want to lighten up for us!

This past weekend, the Ossining Fire Department held our annual inspection & awards dinner. As part of that, we announce the winner of the OFD sponsored Walter Quast Memorial Scholarship. This is a $1,500 award given to any Ossining High School senior & Ossining FD Junior Corps senior that applies and there were several applicants this year. This is annually chosen by the committee to assist a student taking the next step in their academic career.

With that being said, we’d like to congratulate former Junior Corps officer and OHS Co-President, Carter Simkins on being the 2026 award winner! Carter has since joined his father John Simkins as a member of Washington Hook & Ladder (Tower Ladder 42) and will be continuing his studies at Penn State next year!

We wish him the best of luck with his future studies.

For the 2027 seniors next year, we strongly encourage you to consider applying for this. Applications will go out over the winter.

Tonight the members of the Junior Corps held their annual elections and conducted a training at Headquarters that was hosted by Cataract Hose Co. No. 2 History, Ossining NY. We thank the outgoing officers and welcome the incoming.

Their training conducted of a courtyard stretch while forcing a door, searching for life and fire. They stretched from the engine into a hallway and down a flight of stairs that ultimately lead to the basement while they were blacked out to simulate zero visibility.

Tonight the members and advisors of the OFD Junior Corps. traveled down to the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services for a tour of the Westchester County Hazmat, Technical Rescue apparatus and the drill yard. While out on the yard, members were able to see the current Firefighter 1 class participating in various drills.

We'd like to thank our own Angel Lopez (Senate Hook & Ladder) for setting this up, Chief Stiller (Car 2001) for providing the tour and everyone else involved for being gracious enough to give us their time!
