Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers

Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers offer compassion, relief, and the message of God’s love to the poor and suffering worldwide. The call can be anywhere.

We are a community of Catholic missionaries serving overseas in 22 different countries of the world. We are an American Catholic organization that has reached out for more than 100 years to those who are most in need. The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers look to Jesus to feed the hungry, heal the sick and reach out to outcasts. Culture, language, religion, or tradition does not matter. No matter whe

re we are around the globe, we are all part of the human family. Compassion is at the heart of all the ministries of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. We provide life-giving medicines, nutritious food, blankets, or something as simple as a glass of clean water . . . it is compassion at work. We live with the poor and powerless. We work combating poverty, providing healthcare, building communities and advancing peace and social justice - all as a living mission outreach from the Catholic Church of the United States. We are proud of what we have been able to accomplish. Currently, we serve in 22 countries and 83 cents out of every dollar donated to Maryknoll goes directly to our work.

Join Robert Ellsberg, publisher of Orbis Books, in this One On One interview with Mary Fontana as they discuss Strangers in the Province of Joy: Practicing Radical Hospitality on the US - Mexico Border.

This is the story of America writ small—a nation founded by immigrants and its shifting, oft-contradictory attitudes toward them. Since 1978, El Paso’s Annunciation House has welcomed over half a million people: migrants and refugees, doing what humans have always done to find sustenance and safety, and volunteers seeking meaning and purpose. Through this chronicle of their individual journeys, Mary Fontana exposes the forces driving global migration and challenges readers to confront the borders in their own hearts.

Mary Fontana has supported migrant hospitality efforts in El Paso for over two decades. She has written about the border for America, BorderLore, and Consequence. Learn more at maryfontana.com.

On June 6, Deacon Victor Mutobera will be ordained to the priesthood with Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers.

On this special day, we invite you to celebrate with us in prayer.

Deacon Victor grew up in a large Catholic family as the ninth of ten children in the western countryside of Kenya.

“Some of my earliest memories as a child come from tending sheep, goats and cattle,” he says. “Being a shepherd stayed with me most deeply. Even then, the image of the Good Shepherd took root in my heart.”

Deacon Victor first encountered Maryknoll in 2010 while Fr. Lance Nadeau was serving as a university chaplain. By God’s grace, he saw the mission of Maryknoll as a response to the Gospel.

“I found myself thinking, I want to do mission, too,” Deacon Victor says. “I want to learn another language and culture just like the Maryknollers I was meeting.”

We thank God for Deacon Victor and ask you to keep him in your prayers on his Ordination Day.

Join Robert Ellsberg, publisher of Orbis Books, in this One On One interview with
Andrew T. Vink as they discuss Common Evil: Political Economy and the Ethics of Liberation

https://orbisbooks.com/products/common-evil-political-economy-and-the-ethics-of-liberation

Common Evil: addresses a malignant hopelessness that has overtaken our society through a theological analysis that emphasizes concrete manifestations of ideology in history. Part of the struggle of understanding the malaise of our society is a difficulty in connecting the abstract concepts of sinful social structures such as racism, sexism, and neoliberal capitalism to the concrete realities that we experience daily. The common evil, developed from Ellacuría’s theological work, provides a language to start making these connections. As we become able to identify and understand these connections, we are able to participate in critical praxis towards alleviating the suffering created by common evil.

Andrew T. Vink holds a PhD in systematic theology from Boston College and master’s degrees in theology and philosophy from Marquette University. A Roman Catholic, Vink has served as adjunct professor at Mount St. Mary’s University and lecturer at Marymount University.
