Horseshoe Crab Conservation
Susan Linder is a wildlife biologist with Wildlife Restoration Partnerships who specializes in horseshoe crab conservation. As a partner organization of the Horseshoe Crab Recovery Coalition, she measures the density of horseshoe crab eggs during the spawning season
along Delaware Bay in New Jersey. She trains organizations in other states to conduct egg surveys to expand the surveys coastwide, creating a more robust dataset. Other projects include
shorebird conservation and beach habitat restoration projects for horseshoe crabs and shorebirds.
Susan Linder will discuss the fieldwork she conducts to measure the density of horseshoe crab eggs and the importance of the data to managing the species. She will explain her involvement with the New Jersey Delaware Bay Shorebird Project, including working with federally-threatened red knots, and the correlation between horseshoe crabs, migratory shorebirds, and coastal ecosystems. Finally, she will talk about the goals of the Horseshoe Crab Recovery
Coalition in working to restore the population of the species to historic levels, and recent advancements in synthetic alternatives to the use of horseshoe crab blood in the biomedical field.
