Last Thursday, members of the Douglass Project staff joined a visit to the Louisiana State Penitentiary with the and . It was an impactful reminder of the power of proximity and human dignity, characteristics usually missing from the US criminal legal system.

At the Douglass Project, we approach experiences like this with intention and responsibility. We recognize the weight of entering a space like Angola, and we are committed to fostering connection, witnessing creative expression, highlighting dignity in environments where those elements are often denied.

This work and this visit was about amplifying humanity. We are deeply grateful to everyone who showed up with openness, humility, and care. We, as the Douglass Project, know that this visit will stay with us for the rest of our lives, and will serve as a constant reminder of the urgency of this work.

As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we reflect on a powerful month of dialogue. Just a few weeks ago, the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice brought conversations and dinner inside women’s prisons in Ohio.

During this special Women’s Empowerment event, women inside and outside prison walls participated in conversations centered on humanity, dignity, and understanding. This created space for women to be heard, seen, and connected through shared stories and reflection.

At the Frederick Douglass Project, we believe that dialogue can shift perspectives and open the door to greater compassion and change.

We’re honored to be part of this moment and grateful to everyone helping create space for these conversations.

We are thrilled to announce that our program at Sing Sing Correctional Facility (right outside New York City) has started up again! Visits will take place every third Wednesday of the month from 12:30-3:30 pm.

These visits will be led by our Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning Program Director, ! JJ was wrongfully convicted in 2000 and spent more than 2 decades incarcerated at Sing Sing. JJ was released via Executive Clemency in 2021, and was fully exonerated in 2024. Now, JJ returns to Sing Sing not as an incarcerated person, but as a leader.

Support the work of the Douglass Project this Giving Tuesday! At the Douglass Project, we are changing public perceptions about incarceration by becoming proximate with the humanity of incarcerated people. We’re driving real societal change through the power of human connection.

But we can only make this vision possible with the help of supporters like you!

Your contribution has a direct impact on our incarcerated participants, our outside visitors, and our Community Ambassadors—themselves formerly incarcerated people who now go back inside to facilitate visits. Swipe to see examples of how your donation can support our work. You can find the link to donate in our bio.
