Last Thursday, members of the Douglass Project staff joined a visit to the Louisiana State Penitentiary with the and . It was an impactful reminder of the power of proximity and human dignity, characteristics usually missing from the US criminal legal system.
At the Douglass Project, we approach experiences like this with intention and responsibility. We recognize the weight of entering a space like Angola, and we are committed to fostering connection, witnessing creative expression, highlighting dignity in environments where those elements are often denied.
This work and this visit was about amplifying humanity. We are deeply grateful to everyone who showed up with openness, humility, and care. We, as the Douglass Project, know that this visit will stay with us for the rest of our lives, and will serve as a constant reminder of the urgency of this work.
