Every year, millions of African immigrants take up residence in the United States in an attempt at the American dream. Today, as in the past, new arrivals are faced with multiple challenges of personal adjustments as they come into contact with a new language, laws and regulations, unfamiliar value systems, social customs, and myriad lifestyle changes. They must make a decision regarding the degree to which they will sustain the social conformities and personal values of the home culture that are essential to oneβs present self-identity, and the extent to which the ways of the new culture will be adopted. This was my family. We did not have the resources to support ourselves as we transitioned into our new environment. As an educator, Iβve seen the challenges immigrant families face as they try to navigate their new environment, especially when it comes to supporting their childrenβs education. Families have no support from schools, and schools have no support from families and children are left with little to no support. Educate My Village has been established to bring solutions to these challenges. I am confident that Educate My Village is a bridge that will connect families to resources and foster partnerships within communities.
