A new law is taking effect in Oregon that forces communications and social media companies to promptly comply with search warrants linked to stalking and domestic violence cases.

The law, believed to be the first of its kind in the country, is named for Kristil Krug, a Colorado woman who was killed in 2023 after an elaborate stalking plot carried out by her husband. He was convicted of her murder last year and sentenced to life in prison.

The new law requires communications companies to respond to warrants in five days and social media companies to respond within 72 hours. In addition to stalking and domestic violence crimes, the companies must also act in cases that involve violations of protective orders in stalking cases.

There were previously no legal deadlines in Oregon for companies to provide those responses, which often took weeks and sometimes months, according to a state assistant attorney general who testified in support of the bill.

When Virginia Giuffre was a child, she became connected to Jeffrey Epstein. He was later convicted for crimes that harmed young and vulnerable people. Many people tried to hide what happened, but Virginia refused to stay silent. In 2011, she first spoke up not only for herself, but over time, her voice reached countless others who had been too afraid to speak for themselves.

Virginia faced powerful people even when it came at a great cost. And she opened doors that had been locked for years. Many started to listen, and her voice helped the world understand how important it is to protect the vulnerable and stand up, no matter how powerful those responsible may be. Virginia played a significant role in the release of key Epstein-related documents. This set off a cascading effect that has led to even more records being unsealed, including an additional 20,000 pages released on November 12, 2025, according to an official press release issued by the House Oversight Committee.

On April 25, 2025, Virginia passed away at 41 years old. Her family said the toll of her experiences had become unbearable for her to carry. Before her passing, she completed her memoir "Nobody's Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice." Virginia reminds all of us that even in the darkest moments, the truth always finds its way out. She continues to inspire survivors everywhere to stand tall and know they are not alone.

Experts warn of increased risks as technology aids human trafficking of minors

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children reported a sharp increase in crimes targeting children online, with reports of online enticement up more than 56% in the first half of 2025—totaling 518,720 cases. Tish Young with Chains Interrupted says technology has made it easier for predators to find and groom young victims. “Our kids are being trafficked and groomed through apps on their devices. It could be as simple as a Tinder, Discord or Bumble meetup, maybe a Roblox chat room or conversation. Next thing they know, they’re caught up in something they didn’t see coming and it’s dangerous.” She stressed that trafficking can happen in unexpected ways, noting that human trafficking can often present at face value as other things.
Young suggested parents should watch for behavioral changes that might signal something is wrong. For example, if a child becomes anxious without their phone or needs to be online at specific times each day, these could be warning signs of something more serious. Having open conversations with kids and teens about what they see and partake in online can help protect them from predators who use technology to exploit vulnerabilities.
Young recommends this safety practice: Before allowing a child to use a new game or app, parents or guardians should first explore it themselves for at least two weeks. They may be surprised by the content, interactions, and behaviors they encounter.
Parents and guardians can find resources through organizations like the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and local anti-trafficking groups to learn how to start the conversation, keep the conversation going, and recognize when a child might need help.

I Wish More People Knew: Sexual violence is a complex and often misunderstood issue. Many individuals may not immediately recognize that they have experienced—or committed—sexual violence. In some cases, it can take years for someone to fully process and label their experience.
In our April newsletter, we share the story of a survivor who was r***d by her boyfriend—an act he did not recognize as r**e at the time. This powerful narrative sheds light on the nuances of consent and the importance of education and awareness.
