Christ Child Society-Oshkosh Chapter

Christ Child Society-Oshkosh Chapter Providing service to area children in need since 1997. Meetings are held at St. Raphael Church, 830 S. in 1887.

Westhaven Dr, Oshkosh, WI 54904 on the third Saturday of each month (except December) at 9:30 a.m. For more than a quarter century, a group of Oshkosh women have volunteered to make life better for area children and their families. They’re members of the Christ Child Society, a national organization that traces its roots back to Washington, D.C. Since its founding in 1997, the Oshkosh CCS Chapter

has provided over a thousand layettes to newborns in the Fox Valley area. The layettes include handmade sweaters, hats, bibs and toys as well as diapers, bottles, wipes and other necessities—all wrapped in a warm afghan or quilt lovingly crafted by chapter members. Layettes are delivered to area hospitals and organizations for distribution. The chapter supports women and children seeking shelter from domestic violence at the Christine Ann Center by contributing materials for special activities and holiday celebrations. The chapter also funds the purchase of Pack n Plays for the Winnebago County Public Health Nurses’ Safe Sleep program; supplies handmade scarves for First Congregational Church’s Anti-Bullying Campaign; and provides families who have experienced a miscarriage or stillbirth with bereavement items such as gowns and small, keepsake “Bobbie Jean blankets” trimmed with ribbon roses. Membership offers opportunities to contribute in many different ways: knitting and crocheting, sewing, baking, organizing, fundraising, event planning, public relations, membership, literacy efforts and community relations. Although the monthly chapter meetings are held at St. Raphael's Church, the group is interdenominational and warmly welcomes new members.

Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, October 18 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Raphael's Church. Please note that we will be meeting in rooms 104-106, located on the opposite end of the building from our usual meeting spot in Good Samaritan Hall. Layette assembly will follow the business meeting.

This will be our last regular meeting until January. Our November meeting will be replaced by our bake and craft sale, and our December meeting is replaced by our Christmas party.

Layette assembly days are fun because all of the wonderful donated items are on display. Our chapter has a very special long-distance friend who has knit hundreds of lovely baby sweaters over the years. We enjoy seeing what special buttons and trims she has used. Other friends donate handmade afghans, quilts, hats and blankets or purchase layette supplies like bottles, pacifiers or baby wipes. We will be assembling layettes after our meeting on Saturday.

Our chapter receives wonderful donations of handmade quilts, blankets and afghans that make our newborn layettes extra special. Some of our community friends are members of Lakeside Quilters or Yarnians of Oshkosh. Others are individuals who enjoy sharing their talents with our organization and ultimately, area newborns in need.
