A nice visit to Heritage Hill near historic Green Bay yesterday!
Interesting that the 49+ acres was formerly used as an orchard by the state prison until the highway came thru creating an opportunity to reuse the land for a historical park with “over 25 original and reconstructed buildings representing historical and cultural developments relevant to Northeast Wisconsin from 1600s to the mid 1900s.”

What is the Historic Tax Credit?

It's one of the most successful preservation tools in America. It helps transform vacant schools, factories, warehouses, theaters, and hotels into productive places again.

New National Park Service data show Wisconsin's recent project activity has slowed, even while the nation experienced one of its strongest years ever.

We'd love to hear why you think that might be.

Richland Center, WI, a hot bed of the Women’s Suffrage Movement, and birth place of Frank Lloyd Wright 159 years ago this Sunday June 7, 2026.
Come celebrate Wright’s 159th birthday this Sunday June 7 for 11-3 pm in Richland Center at the “A.D. German Warehouse”(Mayan Architecture!) that is on the National Register of Historic Places (1974) and is only(?) warehouse designed by Wright.
Per “The Frank Lloyd Wright Trail” website:“Albert German used the warehouse for wholesale storage of sugar, flour, feed, coal, coffee, cement, and groceries from 1921-1927. Wright’s initial building quote was for $30,000. However, construction had to be stopped in 1921, as costs soared to $125,000, and the building was never completed as Wright intended.
The avant-garde warehouse is an impressive brick structure topped by a magnificent concrete frieze that is said to resemble a Mayan temple. The building has four floors, approximately 4,000 square feet each, and an open floor plan.
The warehouse is an example of early poured-concrete construction, and the building rests on a pad of cork for stability and shock absorption. It is the only remaining commercial structure designed by Wright that still exists from his “organic” or “natural” period.” (Frank Lloyd Wright Trail website)
There must be more FLW events going on this weekend???? Who knows of any FLW events ?

🚒 Could this be Wisconsin's cutest fire station?

Built in 1863 and expanded in 1870 with its distinctive tower that housed the alarm bell and provided space for drying fire hoses, the Sauk City Fire Station is believed to be the oldest surviving fire station in Wisconsin. Originally constructed as the home for the equipment of Wisconsin's oldest organized volunteer fire department, the building now serves as a museum preserving that history.

The fire station is listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places, recognizing its importance to Wisconsin's firefighting and community history.

So what do you think? Is this Wisconsin's cutest historic fire station? And does your community have a historic fire station that might give Sauk City some competition in age or quaintness?

We'd love to see photos and hear your stories in the comments.

🏛️ Preservation Month | Places Worth Saving

When local residents formed the Friends of the R.D. Pike Building, they weren't just trying to save an old building. They were working to preserve a place that reflects Bayfield's history, Wisconsin's conservation legacy, and the craftsmanship of a distinctive 19th-century landmark.

Built in 1897 from locally quarried brownstone, the R.D. Pike Building served as both the headquarters of the Bayfield Fish Hatchery and the residence of its superintendent. The hatchery helped establish Wisconsin's fisheries program and continues to raise fish for stocking in Lake Superior and inland waters across the state, while the building remains a notable example of Victorian-era architecture designed by H.P. Padley.

What makes this a preservation story is not only the building's history, but the people who have come together to champion it.

Over the past several years, the Friends of the R.D. Pike Building have rallied support for the site's restoration. Their efforts are now becoming visible through the reconstruction of the building's grand wraparound porch, once the centerpiece of its design and an important step toward returning the landmark to its historic appearance.

Historic preservation often begins when a community decides that a place is worth fighting for. The Friends of the R.D. Pike Building are showing what can happen when people organize, raise awareness, build partnerships, and invest in the places that tell their community’s story.

Every successful preservation effort starts with people who care. Is there a building in your community that needs friends?

Preservation Month. Yesterday 5/26/26 a place worth saving for alternate use?

Per AI online info: “Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBCI) is a maximum-security prison for adult men in Allouez, Wisconsin. It opened in 1898 as the Wisconsin State Reformatory, designed for rehabilitation instead of punishment for first-time offenders. GBCI is known for being one of Wisconsin's toughest prisons, housing around 1,000 offenders who often have violent sentences. The 126-year-old facility has been over capacity for 20 years, with two men sharing cells built for one.”
