Fall is officially here in Wisconsin, and we all know what comes next. Before long, the ground will be frozen and snow will be flying.

That makes now a great time to give your home a quick fall checkup.

Take a walk around your property and look for things that may have changed over the summer:

• New cracks or gaps around your foundation
• Doors or windows that suddenly stick or don’t close properly
• Uneven or sinking sidewalks, driveways and patios
• Gutters or downspouts that aren’t directing water away from the foundation
• Damp areas, musty odors or signs of water in your basement or crawl space

These can all be early warning signs of foundation movement, drainage problems, concrete settlement or moisture issues.

Wisconsin’s freeze-thaw cycles can be tough on homes and concrete, so identifying a problem before winter gives you a chance to understand what’s happening before another season of freezing temperatures, snow and spring melt arrives.

Consider it a little “homework for homeowners” this fall.
