A little more detail about our tree planting.
Cummins planted 27 trees at Quarry Park on Sept. 25, and the city says 11 Cummins volunteers did the digging.
Nine kinds went in the ground: catalpa, American hornbeam, white fir, white pine, hawthorn, lilac, serviceberry, tulip tree and oak. The city says the mix will bring more color, different sizes and more shade to the park.
Part of Quarry Park sits on an old landfill, which is why the park has so few trees. City forester Travis Dirks says so in the city’s video. The landfill is capped and roots could push through the cap, so the crew planted off the landfill footprint.
Dirks sums up the gift this way: “They donated 27 trees and provided some volunteers to install them.”
It’s the third Cummins tree planting in Oshkosh parks. The city says the company put in 43 trees at Pickart Park in spring and 40 at Lakeshore Park last November.
Next time you’re out at Quarry Park, go find the new trees.
