UPDATE: I just submitted a targeted FOIA request to the U.S. Department of Education concerning Matthew Cardenas and his recently announced position as an Advisor within the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS).

Cardenas previously worked as a veterans-policy analyst for The American Legion, an organization that has been heavily involved in advocating for the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act (TCAVA).

Maybe the records show nothing unusual. Maybe they answer some questions.

Either way, veterans deserve the records and the facts.

ICYMI: If any of you ever hit roadblocks with a FOIA request you can escalate your request through the Office of Government Information Services (OGIS). Not a guarantee you will get the information you are seeking, however it's an excellent next step.

Where is the photo op? He post photos of every other meeting. Maybe he holds less regard for female veterans and constituents? On that note my sit down meeting with Mitch McConnell went well.

WHO IS MATTHEW CARDENAS — AND WHY DOES THIS APPOINTMENT DESERVE SCRUTINY?

Matthew Cardenas was a veterans-benefits policy analyst in The American Legion’s Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Division. He represented the Legion’s policy positions before Congress, prepared formal testimony and worked within the same Washington advocacy operation that aggressively promotes the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act.

TCAVA is the controversial package The American Legion National leadership continues pushing despite fierce opposition from veterans concerned about using future VA disability-rating reductions to finance the bill. The Legion created an entire advocacy campaign, directs members to contact Congress and publicly attacked criticism of the legislation as “misinformation” and “fear-mongering.”

Now, Cardenas says he has left for a position in the Trump administration, serving as an adviser under Education Secretary Linda McMahon in the Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services.

OSERS helps develop and coordinate federal policy involving special education, vocational rehabilitation and services for people with disabilities.

Does this screenshot prove he was rewarded for helping push TCAVA? No.

But the timing raises a legitimate question..

Was this simply an unrelated career move, or did participation in The American Legion’s Washington policy operation help secure a political appointment?

Veterans deserve transparency about who developed, promoted and benefited professionally from the TCAVA campaign.

Follow the connections. Request the communications. Get the receipts.
