A ‘Corn’ lesson if you did not know…..

Next time you shuck an ear of corn, look at that annoying tangle of silk with a little respect. Every single thread is connected to one — exactly one — kernel.

For a kernel to exist, a grain of pollen had to land on the tip of its personal silk, then grow a tube down the entire length of that thread to reach it. Eight hundred kernels on the ear means eight hundred silks, and eight hundred separate deliveries that all arrived.

And those gaps where kernels are missing? Nothing wrong with the plant. That's just a silk that never got its grain of pollen — usually because a hot, dry week made the timing miss.

The messiest part of shucking corn is actually the most precise thing in the garden.

The Oz Garden Club will be selling at 3:30 PM Tuesday, August 4 at seventh and Main Street, Osawatomie. (we plan to be done by or before 5:30 PM.)

Tomatoes, peppers, some cucumbers, and some zucchini. Some cherry tomatoes as well.

The Oz Garden Club will be harvesting today, August 2nd plus selling 4:45pm to 6pm at the Over The Rainbow Oz Community Garden…..Located behind the old Hanes Flower Shop on East Pacific.

$2 per pound Tomatoes!
We will also have zucchini peppers and some cherry tomatoes.

All proceeds to our youth scholarship program.

Beautiful Ripe Tomatoes for sale at a bargain! If you live local (Osawatomie) message us or leave a text & can work out arrangements for pickup or delivery. All proceeds to our Oz Garden Youth Scholarship. $2 per pound.

The Oz Garden Club is set up at seventh and Main, Saturday, August 1, 8:30 AM to 11 AM.

All of our tomatoes are homegrown, organic and delicious

All proceeds to our used scholarship program

We have a variety of tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and some zucchini. We have several great tomatoes for BLTs.
