LOCAL FARM BUREAU AG LEADERS ADVOCATE FOR IOWA AGRICULTURE IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

Farm Bureau members from across the state departed their Iowa farms for Washington, D.C., Sept. 14-17, and met with their elected officials and agency representatives, joining a multi-state fly-in. Members shared personal stories from their farms and examples of how important ag issues impact their communities, including highlighting the critical need to pass an updated farm bill. Other important topics and issues raised by members included protecting interstate commerce and growing opportunities for trade.

Twenty-nine members from the graduating class of Iowa Farm Bureau Federation’s (IFBF) Ag Leaders Institute, which trains members on how to represent their farms, their county Farm Bureaus and the ag industry, joined the trip. Included in the trip, pictured left to right, were Will Isley of Cedar Falls, Barbara Thiessen of Nashua, Bradford Bisbee of Stacyville and Carissa Buttjer of Tripoli.

The Farm Bureau leaders participated in a multi-state fly-in joining farmers representing all areas of American agriculture in advocating for congressional action on the new farm bill. Members stressed the urgency of passing an updated farm bill and shared how historically low crop prices create many challenges for farmers and threaten family farms and ag-related businesses. The farmer delegation urged lawmakers to make critical updates to the farm safety net which are needed to help farmers manage risk and provide certainty for long-term planning. Their efforts were impactful, as the U.S. Senate Ag Committee advanced the new farm bill, including IFBF-supported year-round E15 access.

The Washington, D.C. trip serves as the culmination of the year-long Ag Leaders Institute, a program designed for Farm Bureau members of all ages who care about the future of agriculture and want to make a positive impact; have the potential for providing exceptional leadership in their community, county and state; and are interested in advancing in leadership positions within Farm Bureau and agriculture. Participants learn about the latest information and insights on issues important to agriculture, practice developing the leadership skills needed to deal with issues critical to agriculture and leading change and develop a statewide network of leaders in Farm Bureau and agriculture who are committed to the future of rural Iowa. Graduates will be recognized at the Iowa Farm Bureau annual meeting, Dec. 8-9 in Des Moines.

FIFTH GRADERS LEARN ABOUT SOIL HEALTH

Mitchell County Ag in the Classroom Coordinator, Addy May visited all three sections of fifth grade in Osage and literally dug into soil health, learning about the role cover crops and earthworms play in keeping soil productive, the difference between soil and dirt, and the sheer number of microorganisms that live in the dirt. There are more microorganisms in one teaspoon of healthy soil than there are people on the planet.

To test the health of the soil around their school, students buried a pair of 100% cotton underwear, which will be dug up in 60 days (weather permitting). If the soil is healthy, microorganisms will have broken down the cotton, leaving only the elastic waistband behind. The lesson's goal was to teach students how much healthy soil matters in Iowa — both for the agricultural jobs in the area and for the food that ends up on students' plates.

APPLES FOR KINDERGARTNERS

Kindergarteners in Riceville and St. Ansgar Schools were visited by Mitchell County Farm Bureau's Ag in the Classroom Coordinator, Addy May, for a lesson on apples. After reading students a book, she walked them through how apple trees are pollinated and how they change through the seasons, along with the correct way to pick an apple: spinning it off the branch rather than pulling it straight down, which can damage next year's blossom.
Students then got hands-on, peeling and cutting their own apples before turning them into applesauce in a crock pot, which they got to enjoy for snack time.

Your Voice Matters: County Delegate Represents Members at State Policy Conference

On September 9-10, 2026, Nick Thorson represented Mitchell County Farm Bureau at the Iowa Farm Bureau Summer Policy Conference as the county's voting delegate. The conference brings together a voting delegate from each of Iowa's county Farm Bureaus to discuss and establish policies that will guide Iowa Farm Bureau's advocacy efforts on behalf of agriculture and rural Iowa. This year, delegates discussed and set policy positions related to Driver’s Education, Data Centers, Windbreaks, 1031 Exchange, and more.

Each year, Farm Bureau members across the state share input on issues affecting their farms, businesses, and rural communities. These ideas are researched and reviewed by the State Resolutions Committee; a group of 12 farmer-members who help identify the most surfaced issues for policy consideration.
This spring, we gathered member feedback through the annual opinionnaire process. The Mitchell County Farm Bureau Board of Directors reviewed the responses and developed local positions on the most important issues facing members and agriculture today. Thorson advocated for these local positions at the Summer Policy Conference.

Your voice as a Farm Bureau member is vital in shaping Iowa Farm Bureau policy. As we begin another policy development cycle this fall, we encourage you to share the issues that are important to you and your farming operation. Visit www.iowafarmbureau.com/issuesurfacing to submit issues for consideration and to support topics submitted by other members. Your participation helps ensure Farm Bureau policy reflects the priorities of farmers and rural residents across Iowa.

ELGIN SERVES ON IFB RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE

Katie Elgin, President of the Mitchell County Farm Bureau, served on this year’s Iowa Farm Bureau State Resolutions Committee. The committee is composed of 12 farmer members, including one representative from each of Iowa Farm Bureau’s nine districts, two at-large members, and one Young Farmer representative.

The committee reviews issues identified by members across the state, researches those topics, and develops a recommended opinionnaire for county Farm Bureaus. Each county then distributes its own version of the opinionnaire to gather additional input from local members.

After counties establish their local policy positions, the committee reconvenes to review the feedback, conduct additional research, and develop proposed resolutions. These resolutions served as the foundation for discussion, review, and adoption by voting delegates at the Summer Policy Conference.
