🦄 More Than Just a Horse: The Art of the Perfect Therapeutic Pairing 🧠🐎
When you look into the arena during an O.A.T.S. session, you see our incredible horses walking steadily, ignoring distractions, and taking meticulous care of their riders. It looks effortless—but behind that quiet demeanor lies a very specific combination of natural temperament, specialized training, and an important horse/leader bond.
Not every horse has what it takes to be a therapy horse. In fact, it takes a truly exceptional animal to make the cut! Here is a look behind the stable doors at what makes our herd so special.
🧠 Temperament: The Foundation of Safety
A great therapy horse doesn't just tolerate their environment; they actively thrive in it. While a typical performance horse is bred to be highly sensitive and reactive, an O.A.T.S. horse must possess an extraordinarily calm internal default setting. Our riders wiggle in their seats, toss and catch balls or rings, and giggle while they work on their core strength.
The "Spook" Test: Where a normal horse might jump or run from a dropped toy, a flapping regular schedule paper, or an unexpected loud noise, a therapy horse is trained to take a deep breath, stand their ground, and look to their leader for guidance. Our leaders are trained to be the horse's calm, too!
Emotional Intelligence: Our horses possess an uncanny ability to read human emotion. They can feel when a rider is nervous and will slow their steps, or offer a gentle nudge to a student who needs a boost of confidence.
🛠️ Training for the Unexpected
Training a therapy horse is an ongoing process. They must become entirely desensitized to things most horses never encounter:
Mounting blocks and mechanical lifts.
Sidewalkers walking closely on both sides.
Unbalanced weight distribution or sudden, involuntary movements from a rider.
Therapeutic toys, like rings, basketballs, and noisy games used to build cognitive skills.
🧩 The "Delicate Algorithm" of Matching Horse & Rider
There is no "one size fits all" therapy horse because there is no "one size fits all" rider. Every pairing is a carefully calculated match based on the specific physical and emotional goals of the individual:
The Rhythmic Walker: For a rider working on core strength, muscle tone, or pelvic mobility, we need a horse with a wide, rhythmic, and swinging stride. The horse's movement mimics the three-dimensional movement of a human pelvis, literally teaching the rider's body how to walk.
The "Steady Anchor": For a rider with profound sensory sensitivities or high anxiety, we match them with a horse that is practically unflappable—a solid, quiet presence that acts as a safe emotional harbor.
The "Engine": For an independent rider working on advanced sequencing, steering, and building leadership skills, we might pair them with a horse that requires clear, confident cues to move forward, helping the rider practice assertiveness.
Every horse in our barn is an expert in a different field, and watching them unlock a rider's potential is pure magic.
