The smallest VFW post in our district is about to throw the biggest party in Pierce County.

July 4, 2026 | 10am–10pm | VFW Post 969 | 15409 Pioneer Way E, Orting, WA

Free community block party honoring the families behind the uniform. Food, music, and a 250-cupcake USA map for America's 250th birthday.

All of Orting is welcome. Come find us.

Two days. The lawn chairs are coming out.

The Families Behind the Uniform block party is almost here. July 4 at VFW Post 969 in Orting, ten in the morning until ten at night.

Live music. Lawn games. 250 cupcakes. The Moments That Made US history exhibition. A kids zone. Sparklers at dusk. All free, all for our community.

In honor of my grandmother, Sylvia Hicks.

Here's the only thing I'm asking you to do today: share this post.

VFW Post 969 in Orting is hosting a free community block party on July 4 — 10am to 10pm — for military families, veteran families, caregivers, and everyone who loves someone who has served. There will be food, music, a 250-cupcake USA map centerpiece honoring America's birthday, and a short moment to remember the families carrying loss.

No cost. No membership required. Orting's Rec Park at 15409 Pioneer Way E.

If 50 of you share this, one more veteran family in Pierce County finds out where to go on the 4th. That's the whole ask.

Three days until we fill the Post with music and cupcakes.

On July 4, the Families Behind the Uniform block party comes to VFW Post 969 in Orting. Ten in the morning until ten at night.

Here is some of what is waiting for you. Live music. Lawn games. 250 cupcakes frosted into an American flag. The free Moments That Made US history exhibition. A kids zone. And sparklers at dusk.

We built this day to honor military families and to give our whole community a reason to gather. In honor of my grandmother, Sylvia Hicks.

Bring your family. Bring a lawn chair. We saved you a seat.

Families Behind the Uniform — an America 250 community block party honoring military families, veteran families, surviving families, caregivers, and the neighbors who stand with those who serve.

Free. Open to everyone. No tickets. Just show up.

Day 1 of building a USA out of 250 cupcakes. I do not fully know what I'm doing.

But I know why I'm doing it.

My grandmother made an 85-pound cake for America's Bicentennial in 1976. Fed a whole crowd. Red, white, and blue, and completely from scratch.

She passed earlier this year. And on July 4 — America's 250th birthday — I'm going to honor her the way she'd want: by feeding people.

250 mini cupcakes. One for every year. Arranged into a map of the United States on a 6×4 foot table at VFW Post 969 in Orting.

If you want to watch this come together, follow along this week. And if you want to be at the table on July 4 — you're welcome. 10am–10pm at 15409 Pioneer Way E.

When you come to our block party on July 4, you're not just celebrating America's 250th. You're stepping into a community that does this — quietly, daily, without fanfare — every day of the year.

Our VFW in the Community awareness table will be near the entrance. Come ask. Come learn. Come see.

Your voice belongs in this story.

At the Families Behind the Uniform block party, one panel is different from the rest. It is the Reflection Panel, part of the free Moments That Made US exhibition.

It has a QR code called TheirStory. You scan it, and you record a short reflection, in your own voice. Your memory goes into a national archive that outlives all of us.

Maybe you tell about someone you lost. Maybe you say what this country has cost your family. Maybe you just say thank you.

We spend so much time telling the big stories. This panel saves the small ones, the ones only you can tell.
