Important Pest Alert for Butte County Residents

The Butte County Agricultural Commissioner is advising residents to take immediate precautions after the invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter was detected on plant shipments delivered to Costco stores in California.

If you purchased grapevines or citrus plants from any Costco store on or after April 21, 2026, please follow these instructions:

Grapevines: Place two garbage bags over the plant, secure them tightly, and contact the Butte County Agriculture Department to arrange pick up.

Citrus plants: Contact the Butte County Agriculture Department to schedule an inspection.

Please do not return, transport, or relocate these plants.

Do not place plants in the trash or compost bin.

Taking these steps will help prevent the spread of this invasive pest and protect local agriculture and home gardens.

What happens when a small group of UC Master Gardeners realizes they can’t reach every classroom—but still want every student to have access to hands-on science?

They build something new.

The UC Master Gardeners of Butte County, volunteers created The Living Lab, a project that trains teachers to bring garden-based science into their own classrooms. What started as a challenge is now reaching thousands of students.

This innovative approach recently earned them 2nd place in the statewide Search for Excellence competition.

It’s a great example of what happens when volunteers see a need and step in to solve it.

The children stand side by side, facing the table, reaching toward containers and materials set out in front of them. They wear colorful clothes, including a green dress, pink shorts, and a pink sweater. They are in an outdoor learning space with woodchip ground cover, leafy trees providing shade, and a chain-link fence behind them. A pickup truck and recycling bins are visible in the background.
