This is Olive, a 3 week old blind kitten that came to us in June 2025. Found on a hot driveway, she had a respiratory infection and severe mange. The vet said that Olive appeared to be blind from birth and that nictating membranes covered both eyes. She received antibiotics, quality food and treatment for mange. She continued to heal and her fur grew back. The vet advised us to let her grow up and see if she had any more problems with her eyes. Olive showed us that she functioned normally, despite her blindness. She is able to run and play, cuddle with the dog and her human foster parents and defend herself from other “scary” cats. I use adaptive methods to help her deal with blindness. She uses a ramp to climb off the bed and chases toys that she can hear because of added bells or crinkly paper. She depends on hearing and her sense of smell to “see” the world.
Most of the time, she is identical to any other kitten. However, when an unfamiliar cat gets close she sniffs the air and yells, which usually scares the “offender” away.
She might benefit from an exam under anesthesia to see what is under those nictating membranes
