Staff Sgt. Veverka was 25 years old, and in his final year of the Wildlife Ecology program, when his Army National Guard unit, the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry (Mountain), was called to serve in the Middle East. He was killed May 6, 2006 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M1083 cargo truck during combat operations in Diwaniyah, Iraq.

David is remembered fondly by family, friends, classmates, and fellow soldiers, many of whom were in attendance at today's ceremony, which has been held every year since 2006 in his memory.
