Congrats to 3rd grade Mariah Moreno and her teacher Angela Lopez of Maldonado Elementary School!

Last September, Ms. Lopez’s class was among the many classes to receive a visit from our partners at Environmental Education Exchange, delivering an interactive presentation to 3rd and 4th graders on walking and riding safety. After the visit, students take home a short walking survey and are encouraged to go on a walk
with their families and reflect on the experience together.

Students who returned their completed surveys were entered into a raffle to win a bicycle and helmet—and Mariah was one of the lucky winners! This bike is especially meaningful because it’s her first bike without training wheels. When asked where she was most excited to ride, Mariah didn’t hesitate: “home from school.”

Mariah’s first ride was a family affair. She was joined by her dad and her younger sister, who rode alongside her on a smaller bike. And when Mariah outgrows her new bike, she already has a plan to pass it on to her sister.

Mariah’s new bike was provided by Wheels for Kids, a volunteer-run non-profit organization that collects used bikes, overhauls them, and redistributes them through partner organizations. Thank you WFKs for supporting Tucson kids!

Wheels For Kids has closed the books on 2025 and what a year it was!

It was a very productive year, providing practical transportation for many to school and work, as well as joy for those who received their first bike and those who rode again after going without a bike for years. WFK volunteers refurbished and donated 626 bikes to partner charities in greater Tucson, the highest number of bikes donated in WFK’s history. There was so much joy, fun and basic transportation brought to each recipient! In addition, we delivered our 6,000th bike – an exciting milestone.

Wheels For Kids leadership would like to say “Thank You” to our donors and our volunteers. WFK is supported by two very special groups of people: Donors who provide financial support and used bikes for our program, and volunteers who provide their time, talents and lots of hard work. We are so grateful to all of these generous supporters: without them our work would not be possible.

Our dedicated volunteers contribute in myriad ways to help dreams come true. The jobs range from picking up donated bikes, ordering and stocking parts used to refurbish bikes, refurbishing the bikes, quality control review of bikes, managing our website, fundraising, communicating with partner organizations, delivering bikes to partner organizations and more. Wheels For Kids is blessed with donors and volunteers with hearts of gold.

If you’d like to join one of the best volunteer opportunities in town, please contact Tom Terfehr (520-789-7243) and find out how your time and talents can contribute to the magic Wheels for Kids creates!
