Volusia County Public Library’s September results are in! During National Library Card Sign-Up Month, 1,596 new library users registered for a library card, and 745 library users renewed their cards. These results included 478 children, 40 teens, and 48 veterans.

The story continues beyond the numbers. Library cards connect communities with books, digital resources, opportunities to learn something new, and much more. Visit a local branch or visit Volusia County Public Library’s website to learn more about getting a library card.

Please consider.....if Amendment 3 passes, the funding for essential services will be dramatically reduced! The fire department, police, EMS, sanitation, parks and libraries depend on local funding from property taxes!

Volusia County Public Library joins libraries nationwide in celebrating National Friends of Libraries Week, Oct. 18-24, by recognizing local Friends of the Library groups that support library services throughout Volusia County. Friends of the Library groups at all 14 branches contribute time, talent, advocacy, and financial support that strengthen library collections, programs, spaces, equipment, and services for library users of all ages.

In fiscal year 2026, Friends groups contributed more than $200,000 in support of library services. This funding brought speakers, musicians, and performers to yearlong programming, provided programming supplies, supported additional technology and maker equipment such as robotics, sewing machines, Cricut cutters, and 3D printers, and helped refresh furnishings in library spaces. Several Friends of the Library groups further supplement physical and virtual library collections that reach library card holders across Volusia County.

This week, library supporters across Florida are reminding us that libraries are more than buildings with books. They are town halls, study spaces, cooling centers, technology hubs, storytime rooms, job seeker support centers, meeting places, early literacy partners, safe public spaces, and one of the few places where everyone can walk in without being asked to buy anything.
Recent stories from Sarasota, Manatee, Jacksonville, Nassau, Pinellas, Miami-Dade, and Volusia all point to the fact that Amendment 3 is not just a tax question; it is is a local library services question.
When local property tax revenue is reduced, local leaders still have to balance budgets. That can put libraries in competition with parks, public works, nonprofits, programs for children, and other quality-of-life services. For libraries, the impacts can show up as fewer open hours, fewer staff, smaller collections, reduced programs, less technology access, delayed projects, new fees, or branch closures.
Friends groups, foundations, donors, and volunteers are essential. They help libraries do more. But they cannot replace stable public funding for staff, hours, buildings, utilities, technology, collections, outreach, and open doors.
Before voting on Amendment 3, ask what it could mean in your own community. How is your library funded? What services depend on local public dollars? What happens if that funding is reduced?
Libraries are local services. Library funding is local funding.
