Jack Norton Elementary school students recently took part in an Indigenous Science Camp focused on connecting youth with the land, ocean, and traditional Yurok knowledge. Throughout the trip, students explored the coast through tide pooling, coastal hikes, and learning about local plants and ecosystems.
Youth also learned about traditional Yurok houses and canoes, gaining a deeper understanding of how Yurok people lived and continue to live in relationship with the environment since time immemorial. Through exploration, cultural teachings, and outdoor learning, students were able to experience Indigenous science in action while building connections to the natural world around them.
A big thank you to Sue-meg State Park, Dave Severns, and everyone who helped make this meaningful experience possible for our youth.
Thank you to the California Coastal Commission, Whale Tail Grant, and Elevate Youth for funding this field trip, and to all of our partners who helped make this event possible for our communities.
