Jack Norton Elementary school students recently took part in an Indigenous Science Camp focused on connecting youth with the land, ocean, and traditional Yurok knowledge. Throughout the trip, students explored the coast through tide pooling, coastal hikes, and learning about local plants and ecosystems.

Youth also learned about traditional Yurok houses and canoes, gaining a deeper understanding of how Yurok people lived and continue to live in relationship with the environment since time immemorial. Through exploration, cultural teachings, and outdoor learning, students were able to experience Indigenous science in action while building connections to the natural world around them.

A big thank you to Sue-meg State Park, Dave Severns, and everyone who helped make this meaningful experience possible for our youth.

Thank you to the California Coastal Commission, Whale Tail Grant, and Elevate Youth for funding this field trip, and to all of our partners who helped make this event possible for our communities.

The return of the salmon to the Klamath watershed is more than a natural event — it is a reminder of culture, resilience, and connection. For Native communities along the Klamath, salmon have always been a vital part of life, providing food, teachings, ceremony, and a relationship that has been carried on for generations.

This year's salmon run brought the community together in a powerful way. Families, youth, elders, and community members gathered along the river to celebrate, fish, share knowledge, and honor the importance of caring for the river and its resources.

Moments like these remind us how important it is to continue protecting the Watersheds and preserving traditional knowledge for future generations.

The river connects us all, and together our community continues to stand strong for the salmon, the water, our neighbors, and the generations to come.

Free Flow: Restoring Rivers for Better Fish Migration

Online Webinar – Thursday, May 28
In celebration of World Fish Migration Day

9:00am – 11:00am - Pacific Daylight Time (PDT, GMT -7)

Register at: tinyurl.com/FreeFlowWebinar

Join global river advocates for an online seminar hosted by Living Rivers Foundation, Rivers for Climate Coalition, and the Water Working Group of the German Forum on Environment and Development, celebrating World Fish Migration Day 2026.

At this seminar, we will learn about two parallel efforts to restore rivers on two continents, half a world away. This includes efforts to remove four dams on the Lower Snake River in Washington State, USA, which would restore salmon runs, water quality, and natural flows there. We will also hear how the declaration of the Vjosa River in Albania as the first River National Park stands as a model for river protection, at the same time, many pristine rivers are facing uncertain futures in the name of hydropower development.

Presenters:

Kayeloni Scott
Executive Director, Columbia Snake River Campaign

Amelie Huber
Euronatur, Blue Heart of Europe – Balkan Rivers

If you care about the environment, people (especially local tribes), plants, and animals, you should care about instream flows. They are connected to culture, health, money, and the future of California!

No matter your age, occupation, or education level, Save California Salmon encourages you to make your voice heard. This can be done through public comments and by going to hearings and writing/speaking to legislators about where our water is going and why.

Remember, water is more than a resource, but also a relative.
