Elements Theatre Company recounts Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, harkening back to the original method of storytelling used by Dickens himself.

Join us Dec 16-18 for “A Christmas Carol”—Charles Dickens was thirty-one years old when he produced this story at his own expense as a Christmas gift for the world, at only five shillings a copy (a price that almost everyone could afford). His images of biting cold, snowy London streets, and the traditions of the time—from roasting turkeys and bubbling puddings to the Christmas tree—contributed a great deal to the spread of Christmas celebrations around the world. https://elementstheatre.org/season-tickets/current-season/christmas-carol-2022/

This story never fails to have an impact! It is a story of grace: Scrooge receives an undeserved gift, just as all of humanity did with the birth of our Redeemer over 2000 years ago. And it is a story of hope: Scrooge seems past all hope, at the point of death, but this story reminds us that because we have received such a gift, nobody is past all hope! As a master storyteller, Dickens was so immersed in the living and telling of his stories that he transported his audiences into the lives of the characters that had captured his heart. Dickens gave over 100 readings of “A Christmas Carol”, and his biographer Edgar Johnson wrote: “It was more than a reading; it was an extraordinary exhibition of acting . . . without a single prop or bit of costume, by changes of voice, by gesture, by vocal expression, Dickens peopled his stage with a throng of characters.” (Johnson, 1952, p. 936) https://elementstheatre.org/season-tickets/current-season/christmas-carol-2022/

Come experience a Christmas favorite this weekend— “A Christmas Carol” imaginatively presented in Readers Theater style. “If Ebenezer Scrooge is Everyman, then his journey is our journey, his lessons are our lessons, and his redemption is our redemption. This idea may have hit home before, but Elements Theatre Company’s rendition felt different, more compelling, and more transforming.”—Broadway World Boston Tickets: 508-240-2400 or online.

Join Us! “A Christmas Carol” December 9-19— an imaginative retelling in an enhanced Readers Theatre style. Readers Theatre has been described as theatre of the imagination, for both the actor and the audience. The actor visualizes the character he is speaking to in a space out beyond the audience, allowing the audience to be directly involved in the conversation between the actors. Charles Dickens was thirty-one years old in 1843 when he produced ‘A Christmas Carol’ at his own expense as a Christmas gift for the world, at only five shillings a copy (a price that almost everyone could afford). The overnight success of the little book, which continues to this day, has made Dickens a sort of literary Father Christmas. Please join us December 9-19!

Our Story

Founded in 1993, Elements Theatre Company from Orleans, MA, under the direction of Danielle Dwyer, CJ, has stirred and inspired minds and hearts of audiences through dramatic storytelling and imaginative stagecraft of both classical and modern works, both nationally and internationally. The Company’s commitment to integrity and intensity of language and context, devotion to the transformative work to become the text, and courage to attack the scope of humanity in all its horror, loveliness, and humor, has resulted in high acclaim for their performance authenticity and honesty. True to Elements’ mission of conversation and education, Director Danielle Dwyer, CJ, launched a panel discussion series in 2013, Arts in Conversation, with leaders in arts education, religion, media, and social outreach, with the aim to enrich public dialogue on the power of the arts to humanize our culture. America magazine wrote: “[We] commend Elements for seeking to be agents of change through art.” Highlights of the Company’s mission include two invitational tours to Tuscany, Italy, performing original mystery plays in Latin, several Eastern U. S. and East Coast tours, as well as tours in New York City, Chicago, and Boston. As well as their own continual studies focused on specific techniques, playwrights and methods in London, New York, Chicago, and at Shakespeare & Company, Elements holds workshops sharing their knowledge with students in schools and universities on tour and at home. The Company takes regular times of study to deepen their work and learn more about the craft of theatre.

“Elements Theatre Company is about more than entertainment: every piece they undertake explores the breadth of humanity — its horror, its loveliness, and its humor — with honesty. These actors hold up the mirror for themselves and in turn give us, the audience, the courage to look into that mirror too, and not shy away from what we find.” —Julie Harris

“Everything about this production is awe-inspiring, from the intricate yet natural looking set to the wonder of the audience actually feeling as though they are part of the story…the acting is honestly superb.” —Broadway World

“[We] commend this theater group for seeking to be agents of change through art.” —America Magazine
