The quote below is from Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God” and invites us to dive deeper than romantic love. Hurston, an incredible author, anthropologist, and poet, offers us a treasure trove of insights. Yes, she beautifully explores romantic love, but she also reveals the importance of self-love, courage, and the power we find in uplifting each other, especially in times of adversity.
Today, as we navigate oppressive and lethally chaotic times, we’re witnessing a cycle of oppression that has plagued marginalized communities for far too long. The tactics used against Native Americans, Black men, women, and children, and People of Color echo hauntingly through history.
Let me be clear: Our Human Family stands for love in the face of hate, freedom that confronts oppression, and respect for the dignity inherent in every human being.
If your heart is aching or you are suffering physically from the injustices happening around us, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Try not to be overwhelmed by fear; let love guide you. Reach out to those in need. Stand up and let your voice be heard. Embrace your humanity. Together, let’s choose active love over hate, compassion over indifference.
Let’s support one another and remind each other of our shared humanity. We have the power to create change—but we must choose to use it.
Love one another.
