In 2025, OTTER volunteers gifted 10,760 books to children across 14 Head Start schools in Orange County. Every one of those books now lives in a child's home — building a library, a love of reading, and a lifelong habit.

Children with books at home are more likely to read for pleasure. Children who read for pleasure are more likely to succeed in school. It starts with one book. It starts with one volunteer.

The students always cheer when our OTTER volunteer arrives in the classroom. They are eager to see what new books she reads to them — and what books she leaves for them to take home. Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave everything so we could live in freedom.

On this Memorial Day, Team VCI is grateful, not just for the freedoms we enjoy, but for the spirit of service that connects our military heroes to the volunteers who serve our community every single day.
