The numbers are in for VCI's OTTER Program, and they tell an incredible story.

Of the 1,065 children served this year, 85% made measurable literacy gains. And the people closest to the work agree: 93% of teachers rate our OTTER volunteers as excellent, and 95.5% of both teachers and volunteers say they would recommend the program to others.

These results happen because caring adults show up every week to read aloud to preschoolers across Orange County and gift each child a book to take home and keep.

Could you be one of them?

Reading a prescription label. Checking your mail. Reviewing an important document. For most of us, these are simple daily tasks.

For one of our Senior Companion clients, who has low vision, they depend entirely on a magnifying glass.

When his broke, something as simple as reading a prescription label became a serious challenge. A VCI staff member happened to have a spare at home. That magnifying glass is now in the hands of someone who truly needs it.

This is what community looks like. And thanks to our new Amazon Wish List, the next person who needs one won't have to wait. A handheld magnifier on our list is less than $20 and could be someone's lifeline.

What keeps a volunteer coming back year after year?

VCI's OTTER Program has a 90% volunteer retention rate. That means 9 out of 10 volunteers choose to keep showing up for children in Orange County Head Start programs, reading aloud, gifting books, and watching young minds light up.

When you ask them why, the answer is usually the same: the children.

September is National Literacy Month. If you've been thinking about volunteering, there's no better time to start. One hour a week can spark a lifetime of reading.

Only a few days left! The First Book Fundraiser at dd's DISCOUNTS (7407 W Colonial Drive, Orlando) wraps up August 30. Every dollar you give at the register turns into brand-new books for OTTER classrooms across Orange County, and dd's DISCOUNTS will match whatever our store raises toward our $2,400 goal. If giving a child their first "I did it!" moment matters to you, now's the time to stop by.

You don't need a teaching degree to change a child's relationship with reading. You just need to show up.

VCI's OTTER Program welcomes volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, adults 18 and older, to lead read alouds and literacy activities in Orlando Head Start classrooms. Students, retirees, working professionals, stay-at-home parents: our volunteers come from every corner of life.

What they have in common is this: they believe that a child who loves stories has a better shot at everything else.

We visit 14 Head Start schools across Orlando, including Callahan Head Start, Orlando Day Nursery, and Washington Shores Elementary. Chances are, one is near you. Could you spare an hour or two a week?
