NAWIC Greater Orlando - Chapter 73

NAWIC Greater Orlando - Chapter 73 Our Core Purpose: Strengthen and amplify the success of women in the construction industry. Let NAWIC

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) originally began as Women in Construction of Fort Worth, Texas. Sixteen women working in the construction industry founded it in 1953. Knowing that women represented only a small fraction of the construction industry, the founders organized NAWIC to create a support network. Women in Construction of Fort Worth was so successful that it gain

ed its national charter in 1955 and became the National Association of Women in Construction. Today, NAWIC provides its members with opportunities for professional development, education, networking, leadership training, public service and more.

Day 2 of Construction Career Camp was packed with hands-on learning, industry insight, and plenty of opportunities for our campers to build their knowledge and confidence!

A huge thank you to our amazing industry partners who shared their time and expertise today:

🔹 Terra Roux with CEP made blueprint reading fun and interactive by turning the lesson into a scavenger hunt, helping campers sharpen their plan-reading skills.

🔹 HGR Construction provided an inside look at the role of a General Contractor, explored the many career paths available within a construction company, and discussed real-world jobsite experiences.

🔹 CEMEX taught the campers about concrete and cement before helping them create their own concrete flower pots to take home.

🔹 Merchants Bonding Company generously sponsored lunch and introduced the campers to the important role surety bonds play in the construction industry.

🔹 Connie from Woodwork Orlando shared her knowledge of wood products, discussing different wood types and key considerations when working with them.

In addition to today’s presentations and activities, the campers continued making progress on both their community service project and their individual builds. It’s exciting to watch their skills grow each day as they gain exposure to the many opportunities available within our industry!

We can’t wait to see what Day 3 has in store! 👷‍♀️🔨✨

Day 1 of Construction Career Camp 2026 is in the books! 🦺🔨

Nearly 30 young women arrived at Lyman High School today ready to learn new skills, make new friends, explore future career opportunities, and begin building some incredible projects that they’ll proudly carry under their tool belts.

One of the most rewarding parts of this camp is watching the returning campers step up to help those attending for the first time, and seeing that spark of confidence ignite when a young woman tries something new and realizes she’s capable of more than she imagined. And we’re only getting started!

A huge thank you to our special guests today, Tim Bernardi from Mader Southeast and Cindy Spiropoulos from HJ High Construction, who kicked off the morning with an important lesson on construction safety. It was impressive to see so many hands raised as the campers confidently answered questions and identified real-world jobsite hazards. The future of our industry will be stronger because of the knowledge shared today and the seeds that were planted.

As always, DEWALT delivered an outstanding hands-on experience. The girls rotated through four interactive stations, gaining valuable tool knowledge and practical skills that will help them succeed throughout the week.

The remainder of the day was spent preparing for the builds ahead—reviewing plans, collaborating with teammates, developing strategies, and making all the necessary cuts. Best of all, everyone left with all ten fingers intact, so we’re calling Day 1 a success! 🙌🏻

We can’t wait to welcome everyone back tomorrow for Day 2!
