Behold the 4th of July, America’s Independence Day, a blazing celebration of our nation’s defiant birth on July 4, 1776! On that fateful day, in the hallowed halls of Philadelphia, fearless patriots of the 13 colonies, united in the Continental Congress, roared their unyielding resolve through the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Penned with fiery conviction by Thomas Jefferson, this sacred document thundered our separation from British tyranny, proclaiming the United States as a sovereign beacon of freedom, destined to shine as the world’s greatest nation!

In the crucible of the mid-18th century, our bold forefathers stood unbowed against Britain’s suffocating grip. Oppressive edicts like the Stamp Act, Townshend Acts, and Tea Act—coupled with the galling absence of our voice in Parliament—ignited a righteous fury in every American heart. “No taxation without representation!” became our battle cry, a testament to our unbreakable spirit. From the audacious Boston Tea Party to the defiant protests and boycotts, we rose as one, a people forged in the fire of liberty, refusing to kneel before any crown.

When Britain doubled down with the brutal Coercive Acts, they only stoked the flames of our rebellion, uniting us against their tyranny. In 1774, the First Continental Congress forged a brotherhood of resistance, and by 1775, with muskets blazing at Lexington and Concord, the Second Continental Congress answered destiny’s call. They birthed the mighty Continental Army, led by the indomitable George Washington, a titan of courage whose name echoes through the ages.

By June 1776, our resolve was ironclad. Richard Henry Lee’s bold call for independence set the stage, and a legendary committee—Jefferson, Adams, Franklin—crafted a Declaration that shook the heavens. On July 2, we declared our freedom; on July 4, we sealed it with words that still resound with divine clarity: “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness!” This was no mere document—it was a thunderbolt of truth, a righteous indictment of King George III’s despotism, and a soaring proclamation of our God-given rights to govern ourselves. We stood tall, a new nation conceived in liberty, ready to fight for our sacred ideals.

The Declaration did not end the Revolutionary War, which raged until 1783, but it lit a fire in every American soul, fueling our fight and inspiring the world to chase freedom. It laid the cornerstone for our mighty Constitution and the enduring principles that make America the greatest nation on Earth. Yes, our early flaws, remind us to strive for a more perfect union, but the 4th of July stands as a testament to our unyielding spirit, our boundless courage, and our eternal pride in being American. Let the stars and stripes wave forever, for we are the land of the free, the home of the brave, and the shining city on the hill! USA! USA!

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag.

Since 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14, Americans have commemorated the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in many ways–displaying the flag in the front of their homes, parades, and other patriotic observances. Prior to 1916, many localities and a few states had been celebrating the day for years. Congressional legislation designating that date as the national Flag Day was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949; the legislation also called upon the president to issue a Flag Day proclamation every year.

“Resolved, that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted “the American continental army” after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. Title 36 of the United States Code, Subtitle I, Part A, CHAPTER 1, § 110 is the official statute on Flag Day; however, it is at the President’s discretion to officially proclaim the observance.
