Yoruba religion, what we have is a way of life. A culture, traditions. Christianity is a religion. So is Islam and Judaism. You would argue that all these religions are ways of life to those who follow them. Yes. That is true but there is one factor that differentiates Yoruba culture from these religions and that is the ‘us or no one else ‘ principle.
It's a recurrent theme in religions. The idea that their belief is chief and the only correct way to go. If you're not Christian, you're pagan. If you're not Muslim, you're an infidel.
No such thing exists in Yoruba culture. Ask any Ifa priest, he won't tell you that if you don't bow to his faith you'll burn in some oven somewhere. In fact. In Yorubaland, many Christian and Muslim sects have actually merged the local customs into their faiths.
Yourba culture is a guide to living a fruitful and fulfilling life, it teaches morals that'll help you live well with others and even the mystical parts are directed towards helping those who follow it (mostly)
Think of it more like a set of tips on how to enjoy the time you have on this plane. You can decide to follow it or not. You don't get punishment for not adhering to a strict set of codes that is mostly impossible to follow without deviation.
Well that's how I see it. Thanks for reading.
