Happy Birthday, Sammie Smith!

Happy 59th birthday to former Florida State Seminoles Football and Florida State Track and Field standout Sammie Smith!

A native of Apopka, Smith spent four seasons in Tallahassee from 1985 to 1988. He helped the Seminoles win a bowl game in each of his four seasons on campus, beginning an NCAA record streak of 11 straight bowl victories for FSU. He was named the MVP of the 1986 All-American Bowl when he rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-13 win over Indiana -- an FSU bowl record.

A 2-time All-South Independent selection, Smith's best statistical season came as a junior in 1987 when he rushed for 1,230 yards -- still the fourth-highest season total at FSU -- and seven touchdowns with a 7.2 yards per carry average. For his FSU career, Smith finished with more than 2,500 rushing yards and 18 total touchdowns. In addition to his football accolades, Smith was a Metro Conference outdoor champion in the 100 and 200 meters as well as the 4-by-100-relay.

Selected by the Miami Dolphins with the ninth overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, Smith spent four seasons in the league with the Dolphins and Denver Broncos. Smith would overcome personal and legal issues to become a nice redemption story later in his life. For more than a decade, he's worked for Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Through FCA, Smith spent eight years working with the football program at Ole Miss as director of character development. The owner of three of the 11 highest single-game rushing efforts in FSU history, Smith was inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame in 2013. He still ranks seventh in program history in career rushing yards.
