Happy Nurse Practitioner Week!

Today we are highlighting a few of our members who have taken the extra step in their nursing career to provide care in the community!

They are hardworking, and committed to bettering their communities through their knowledge.

Nurse Practitioners have truly made an impact in responding to the increase healthcare demands and need for providers in our communities! They have the clinical knowledge, skills, and right attitude to provide preventive care, and manage chronic conditions! Thank you for all you do!

Did you know that high blood pressure is often called the “silent killer?”

Most of the time, high blood pressure (HBP, or hypertension) has no obvious symptoms to indicate that something is wrong.

The best ways to protect yourself are being aware of the risks and making changes that matter.

A few facts to be aware of:

1. Many people with high blood pressure don’t even know they have it.

2. Often the signs and symptoms are misunderstood.

3. High blood pressure develops slowly over time and can be related to many causes.

4. High blood pressure cannot be cured. But it can be managed effectively through lifestyle changes and, when needed, medication.

Last weekend Haitian American Nurses Association of Orlando, Inc. had an opportunity to participate in a Disaster Relief Effort/Humanitarian Medical Mission for those affected by the 7.2 Magnitude of Earthquake that struck the south areas of Haïti. This effort was coordinated under the larger umbrella of Haitian Alliance Nurses Association-International which comprise of all 11 Haitian American Nurses Association chapters throughout the United States.

Within two days of mission we were able to establish a medical clinic and see over 650+ patients in the remote areas of Labiche and Saint Louis du Sud area. The clinic was able to house an area for triage, consultation, pharmacy, and product distribution (hygienic products, toys, baby care items, and food).

We were able to partner with: Man Dodo Foundation, Haitian American Pharmacy Association (HAPA), Faculte Des Sciences Infirmiere des Cayes, Dr. Pierre Jean Odnard, Dr. Desruisseaux Pierre Angelor, and Dr. Léon Lyvenston who derived from Hospital General of Les Cayes, Haïti

We also give special thanks to our sponsors: The Smile Trust, HAPA, Primary Medical Center, Walgreens Pharmacy, Pearls of Life Women Foundation and Dr. Joseph Durandis.

...Because one day is not enough to celebrate the people who make up our great profession. We are the shoulders our patient’s cry on; the hands that they hold. We are coaches and cheerleaders. We work tirelessly to provide care quality care to our patient’s. There is no denying that it is hard work...but it is also so rewarding. Happy Nurses Week from H.A.N.A. Orlando!
