Always Wear Your Seatbelt Foundation

Always Wear Your Seatbelt Foundation Co-Founded by Wendy Grant & Lorisse Garcia, mothers of Laura & Eddie. Received 501c(3) status, September 21, 2012

These statistics became our community’s reality on Sunday, February 6, 2011 when six of our beloved teenagers were on their way to New Smyrna Beach. A tragic automobile accident took the lives of 17 year old Laura Grant and her 19 year old boyfriend, Eddie Culberhouse. The accident severely injured two of the other teens and left two more suffering minor injuries. We believe that if every teen had

been wearing their seatbelt during the accident it would have saved lives and prevented injuries. Immediately following the accident it was assumed that Laura had not been wearing her seatbelt, however subsequent investigation has revealed that Laura was in fact belted at the onset of the accident. We believe that had Laura's seatbelt remained in place it would have saved her life and that in most instances seat belts do save lives. A passionate message has been born out of Laura and Eddie's story, to amazing young people whose lives and love have touched so many. The Always Wear Your Seatbelt (AWYS) Foundation was founded by their mothers in loving memory of two incredible teens who seemed to know that they would be together forever.

Our mission has always been to save lives by raising awareness and educating teens to always wear your seatbelt, if not for yourself, for Laura and Eddie. After 15 years of teen safe driving education and awareness and the support of an incredibly generous community, we want to share something deeply personal.

Last year we found ourselves at a crossroads, the foundation had grown beyond our capacity and we faced a difficult choice. Invest in a full-time executive director or scale back the organization.

After much prayer, reflection, and heartfelt consideration, we have decided that the Always Wear Your Seatbelt Foundation, founded in loving memory of our children, Laura Grant and Eddie Culberhouse, will be sunsetting its operations as this school year comes to an end. This decision has not come lightly. It comes with deep gratitude and with the understanding that while this chapter is closing, the mission does not end.

This foundation was born from an unimaginable loss, two vibrant young lives taken far too soon. As their mothers, we made a promise in our grief that by sharing their stories, we would save lives.

Over the past 15 years, that promise has reached far beyond Central Florida, touching more lives than we could ever imagine.

Through schools, clubs, community outreach, special events, 10 annual 5Ks, and countless conversations and presentations, we have worked tirelessly to turn awareness into action, reminding every person who hears our message that one simple choice can mean everything.

Laura and Eddie’s legacy lives on in every life touched, every habit changed, and every seatbelt buckled.

To our families, friends, neighbors, schools, board members, generous sponsors, donors, and everyone who supported us, shared our message, and believed in this mission, thank you. You all helped turn heartbreak into purpose.

Finally, we extend our sincere gratitude to Karen Pelot, who generously volunteered her time to serve as board president and executive director for the past four and a half years. Karen, you have been a true champion for Always Wear Your Seatbelt, and we deeply appreciate both the work you have done to sustain this foundation and your unwavering love for Laura and Eddie.

As we move forward, we carry with us the same message that started it all. It only takes two seconds to buckle up, if not for yourself, for Laura and Eddie. We thank God for His grace and for His strength that has carried us to now.

With love, remembrance, and gratitude,
Lorisse and Wendy.

One way that we like to give back to our community is through our AWYS scholarships. Since 2011, we have been priviledged to award scholarships to deserving AWYS Club Ambassadors. If our count is right, this year we hit a total of 38 scholarships awarded! Every year we are blown away by the high-caliber, high-achieving students who chose to become AWYS ambassadors. We are so proud of each of them, especially this year's scholarship winners! East River High School: Adalyn White, Annuesa Mahmood. Innovation High School: Annabella Carrasqueri, Reagan Burks, and Thesia Gercy. WAY TO GO LADIES!!!

From the beginning, we've implemented a variety campaigns and initiatives all aimed at raising awareness and saving lives, as we educate teens to ALWAYS wear their seatbelts: our annual 5K, AWYS billboards, and buses have spread our life-saving mission throughout our community and beyond!

May 18 will always be a day we hold sacred. This is the day, in 1993, that Laura Jeanne Grant made her debut into our world. She was beautiful from her first breath, and grew in to an extraordinary young woman with a twinkle in her eye and a laugh that would fill your heart with joy. There will never be a day we don't miss you, Laura. Today, in honor of Laura's birthday, please consider doing something extra-special for someone today. Maybe a loved one, or maybe a stranger, do something that brightens their day! Happy heavenly birthday Laura!
