I sat in a big ole' meeting of Public Information Officers this morning at work and listened to a roundtable of really passionate people talking about their work in overdose prevention, mitigating disease spread, tracking and reducing food waste, forecasting and preparing for winter storms, opening parks for residents, finding money-saving ways to install roundabouts, fighting fires, trying to help a resident struggling with a shady contractor, providing Head Start for kids, and organizing volunteer clean-up events in conservation areas.

A whole room, filled with people who work really hard - for not great pay, with a lot of public scrutiny - just to help out. To contribute to the society we're all working to have. Day in, day out - how to make people's lives better.

Government workers get a bad rap, but y'all? Public service is where it's AT. I'm really grateful I get to work here.
