🎪 Carnival at Boca: Safety is the Main Attraction! 🎪

Affordable housing provides a place to call home. Strong communities help make that home feel connected, supported and safe.

That came to life at Boca Club during National Night Out, where 80 residents came together for a celebration led by the Boca Club Resident Leadership Team.

When the rain arrived, residents took the carnival inside the clubhouse, bringing the fun with games, cotton candy and popcorn, while the dunk tank kept the celebration going outside! 🌧️🎪

Families connected with neighbors, learned about neighborhood safety and engaged with local partners, including Commissioner Bakari Burns.

What made the evening especially meaningful was seeing resident leadership in action. A few young adults who grew up in ONIC’s Youth Program are now volunteering, recruiting others, and helping lead activities. ❤️

That is the power of affordable housing paired with Resident Services: creating opportunities for residents to connect, lead and invest in their community.

Thank you to City of Orlando - Government, District 6 Commissioner: Bakari F. Burns, Orlando Police Department, Mini Health Clinic:for donating youth prizes and games, and Merry Minstrel LLC for discounting large carnival items and providing additional games at no cost in support of the Boca Club team's National Night Out event.

We are blown away by the Hollowbrook resident leadership team, the Trailblazers. They entered the City of Orlando’s National Night Out theme contest for the very first time, and won 2nd place! 🎉

For the past few months, the team worked alongside their Resident Services Coordinator to recruit volunteers, connect with local businesses, and bring their theme to life: Stronger Together: Safer Neighborhoods.

Despite the pouring rain, more than 40 residents showed up to learn about neighborhood safety, meet local first responders, enjoy activities, and connect with their neighbors.

A huge thank you to , , , , .edu, , , , , and everyone who helped make the night possible.

Most importantly, thank you to the Hollowbrook Trailblazers. Your leadership is helping to strengthen civic engagement, build connections and create a greater sense of stability and belonging.

Because affordable housing is more than a place to live.

It’s neighbors becoming leaders and communities becoming stronger. ❤️

MISSION MONDAY!

Building strong communities starts with a strong team.

The ONIC team traded emails and meetings for aprons and a three-course meal during a fun team-building experience at Truffles & Trifles.

Together, we rolled up our sleeves and prepared a three-course meal, putting communication, collaboration and a little creativity to work. From prep to plating, it was a great reminder that when we work together, we can create something meaningful.

And, of course, we got to enjoy the results!

A big thank you to Truffles & Trifles for welcoming the ONIC team and giving us a delicious way to connect, collaborate, and build together. 💙

"I got to try something new!" 🌱

And sometimes, that’s where learning begins.

For four weeks, ONIC youth learned how to chop, cut, bake, cook, garden to table plant-based meals working with the staff The Kitchen House.

From eggplant meatballs to veggie quesadillas, our youth were excited, engaged and focused as they tried new ingredients, learned new skills and created something of their own. 🍆🥕👩🏽‍🍳

And the experience didn’t end in the kitchen. Each participant received a cookbook featuring recipes they made that they can take home to make with their families.

We’re grateful to The Kitchen House, a neighborhood nonprofit teaching kitchen and culinary garden connecting people to real food and community through joyful garden-to-kitchen experiences, for welcoming our youth and creating a space where they could learn, explore and grow.

A special thank you to the City of Orlando for supporting this program through the Community Investment Program.

Night two in sunny Miami!

From workshops to peer site visits, we're soaking up new ideas, sharing g experiences, and building our skills as staff and Board members at the neighborworks National Training g Institute (NTI).

We're excited to bring what we're learning to Orlando to strengthen affordable housing opportunities and support the stability of the communities we serve.
And, of course, ending the night with great food and even better company!

“This really is one of the best places to live.” 💙
Ms. Geri, The Roberts

She has called The Roberts home for more than 16 years.

Before the community was preserved and renovated in 2021, she worried she might lose her apartment due to investors looking to purchase the property. Today she speaks about The Roberts with pride. Noting the stability it has provided and the sense of community created by the activities and services offered.

Ms. Geri’s interview was a small part of a video project led by the NeighborWorks Florida Collaborative highlighting the impact of affordable housing across Florida.

We're excited to see the final video featuring ONIC President Alfred Arzuaga, an intergenerational arts and crafts activity at The Roberts, and fellow members of the NeighborWorks Florida Collaborative at the NeighborWorks America National Training Institute this August in Miami.
