🇬🇭 Ghana —> Puerto Rico 🇵🇷

PROPA is thrilled to welcome Dr. Habib Iddrisu to Puerto Rico later this month as the next TEMP🌀RAL master instructor. We are honored to host this distinguished Ghanaian academic, cultural leader, and one of Dagbon’s most prominent chiefs who is a member of the royal Bizing family of court historians and musicians of the Dagbamba / Dagomba people.

This multi-hyphenate is an ethnomusicologist at the University of Oregon and a traditionally trained dancer, musician and historian of traditions from Northern Ghana. In 2025, he was granted the title of Chief or Yani Malizali Naa I which translates to “rescuer” or “builder” for the work he has undertaken to recover traditions from the Kingdom of Dagbon.

Stay tuned for more information about the workshops and lectures Yani Malizali Naa I will provide in Puerto Rico related to music, dance, history and traditions.

🇵🇷🌺 PROPA was honored to join the puerto_rican_heritage_society of Hawai’i during the blessing of the Puerto Rican casita at the interactive Plantation Village and gardens in Waipahu, Oahu where we were able to see Heather Paulino (who is 5th generation in Hawai’i) share the portrait of her ancestors who left Yauco, PR 125+ years ago; enjoy Boricua cuisine still found in Hawai’i including a version of bacalao con viandas that uses ube (a purple fleshed tuber); and hear from Dr. Juanita Denninghoff about how her ancestral memory from Puerto Rico is alive not just in her DNA but also in her artwork and curricula that she develops for children across that archipelago.

🍍⛩️This park is open to the public and has a number of structures that reflect various ethnic groups (such as Japanese, Portuguese and Korean) that came to work on the various (sugar & pineapple) plantations of the archipelago from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s.

The word plantation is often used there to describe large corporate farms of the recent past.

🎉 PROPA in collaboration with the Juan Antonio Corretjer Puerto Rican Cultural Center and the Puerto Rican Studies Association invite you to be part of a history making event. On Saturday, September 12, 2026 at 7:00 pm PROPA will dedicate La Casita de Don Pedro y Doña Lo**ta on Paseo Boricua in Barrio Borikén / in Humboldt Park as a Lugar Histórico.

🪧 This dedication of La Casita will commemorate a communal space that has long served as a gathering place for the preservation and celebration of Afrodescendant traditions from Puerto Rico – particularly Bomba. This includes rehearsals, performances, bailes de Bomba, workshops and many other events that have drawn ChiRicans, other community members and visitors to this place with the distinct purpose to honor AfroBorikua history and culture over the decades – including various sessions of PROPA’s own biennial Bomba Research Conference, among other workshops with Bomba practitioners from Puerto Rico.

📍Join us in commUnity to dedicate La Casita as a Lugar Histórico to the very rhythms that have been present in this space for nearly 30 years. We invite you to wear white in honor of the Afroancestres whose legacies have been carried forward over time and across land and water where they have lived on in the songs, movements and memories that Chicago’s Bomba community has worked so hard to preserve and share with the world. Bring your Bomba drum, pandereta, skirt and your voice to join this special event!

🌟 This event is supported in part by 26th Ward Alderperson Jessie Fuentes, La Escuelita Bombera de Corazón, AfriCaribe, El Schomburg and Taller Entre Aguas.
