For all of us involved in dogs, we want the best care. With that being said we know there may be some bad apples in dogs, just as in any other industry whether it be an attorney, physician, politician and the list goes on with actors, musicians and so forth. To say all large volume breeder or any Preservation breeders are bad, or laboratories or rescues are hoarders is totally incorrect. Please read the AKC alert and look to more information. The chihuahua, their physical needs and space is totally different than a Malinois, German Shepherd Dog or Irish Wolfhound. There is not a one size fits all, but common sense and recommendations from the AVMA, AKC, NAIA and many like minded organizations should be pivotal in the care we provide at our homes or any entity where dogs are housed. The USDA has extended their comment time to April 20th. Many concerns are the difference in needs of breeding females, socialization and exercise.

Today, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) announced that it is extending the period for comments about potential updates to its dog welfare regulations. The original comment period was to end today, Thursday, March 19th. The comment period will now end on Thursday, April 20, 2026.
APHIS is seeking comments from the public on appropriate standards for (1) the care of breeding female dogs at dog breeding facilities and (2) exercise and socialization of dogs subject to the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA).
For details on the specifics of APHIS’ request, points to consider, and how to provide comment, read AKC’s February 17th regulatory notice.
