In San Francisco, the most visible signs of homelessness are disappearing. Meanwhile, the jail population is up about 50% since 2021. Coincidence?

Mayor Daniel Lurie and city leaders have enforced bans on camping and moved people off sidewalks to reduce visible homelessness. Critics say too many homeless people are housed in jail.

As the Charmin commercial says, we all go. But when you don't have housing, where are you supposed to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night?
Finding an open and accessible bathroom can be a big challenge -- especially on holidays, weekends or at 3 a.m. People experiencing homelessness often get arrested for doing in "public" what they can't find a place to do in private.
For the past several months, the Christian Service Center for the Homeless has been exploring how to create safe, easily cleaned bathroom facilities in the downtown area that are available 24-7.

"This is why treating affordable housing as a niche concern for the poor is such a costly mistake. Housing sits underneath nearly every problem communities say they care about: jobs, schools, health care and growth. " -- Jonathan Wolf, founder and CEO of Wendover Housing Partners Excellent commentary from an affordable housing developer who has built some of the most attractive senior, student and workforce housing in our area.

Congress passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, but city and county policies and private institutions must do their part to close the housing gap in Central Florida and beyond.
