BEST FOOT FORWARD FOR PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

In Central Florida on average, 3 people are injured every day, and at least 1 person is killed every week for doing something as simple as crossing the street. 14 percent of those fatalities in Central Florida occur in marked crosswalks. In 2012, the Best Foot Forward coalition formed on the belief that the status quo is unacceptable. The coalition comprised is of partners in Orange, Seminole, and Osceola Counties. As a pedestrian safety initiative, Best Foot Forward focuses on one simple, measurable goal: to get more drivers to yield and stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks, as Florida law requires. Best Foot Forward works to accomplish this goal using the proven, “Triple-E” approach of combining community education with low-cost engineering changes and high-visibility enforcement.

BIKE 5 | 5 MILES, 5 PARKS, 5 CITIES | Advocacy Ride

Bike 5 Cities is a 30-mile regional bike ride for bicyclists of any age, experience, or ability level. It’s for those who want to discover where to comfortably ride their bikes through these five urban cities — whether it’s through a neighborhood, down a local trail, or to a shop, restaurant, or park in one of the five cities. Since its inaugural ride in 2017, the Bike 5 Cities Ride, the bike-friendly route map, and the push for awareness of the effort were all to further a greater goal of encouraging our decision-makers to build more bike-friendly roads with slow speeds and special infrastructures like cycle tracks and trails. As the movement has grown stronger, the Bike 5 Cities route has grown into a tool used to heighten awareness toward places that need safer connections while celebrating the comfortable places to ride that are already in place. The route isn’t just a one-day ride anymore, it’s about showing people how to get around on bike-friendly roads and enabling them to feel safe to travel between cities on two wheels.

HEALTHY WEST ORANGE TRAILS CONNECTION

Healthy West Orange Trails Connection (HWOTC) promotes, activates, and enhances the trail system throughout West Orange to create opportunities for physical activity, social engagement, prosperity, and happiness. To fund the initiative, the Foundation for a Healthier West Orange and HWOTC have been entrusted with $5.5M from the West Orange Healthcare District to support the mission. The HWOTC Steering Committee will determine the best use of the funds, accelerating the implementation of projects that support walking, cycling, and wellness activities within the communities while improving multi-modal safety. The $5.5M grant also serves as seed money to attract additional investments in the region’s trails and enhance current and future trail projects. Bike/Walk Central Florida administers the coalition on behalf of its partners.

The latest Dangerous by Design report from Smart Growth America is out, highlighting both continued urgency and meaningful progress in pedestrian safety across the country.

Florida ranks as the 5th most dangerous state for people walking, underscoring the continued need for sustained investment and commitment to Vision Zero.

Across many of the communities we serve—including Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Volusia, Brevard, Polk, and Duval—local program partners are advancing safer streets through targeted investments and long-term safety planning, even as the report shows uneven progress across the region.

At the same time, more than 7,000 people are still killed while walking each year in the United States.

We recognize the work being done and the work still ahead. Every life lost is preventable, and every improvement is a reason to keep going.

Families came together for a fun-filled morning focused on bike, scooter, and summer safety, helping kids kick off the season with the knowledge and equipment they need to stay safe while riding and exploring their community. 🚲🛴

During the event, 163 helmets were professionally fitted and distributed to local youth, helping more kids ride confidently and safely this summer. ⛑️

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and to the partners and volunteers who helped make this event possible! 💛

Some of the best moments on a bike aren’t about the miles.

They’re the fun rides with friends where the conversations matter more than the destination.
The experience of exploring a new trail or neighborhood and feeling connected to the community around you.
The quick trip where leaving the car at home just feels better.
The peace of mind that comes with riding on connected trails and safer streets.
The freedom of moving through a community in a way that feels active and enjoyable.

World Bicycle Day is a celebration of all the ways biking shows up in our lives, for transportation, recreation, connection, independence, and everyday adventure.

It’s also a reminder of why connected trails, comfortable routes, and safer streets matter as more people choose to walk, bike, and roll in their communities.

Do you have a favorite ride, route, biking photo, or memory? Share it with us in the comments below! This clip was taken during BIKE 5 in Casselberry last year. 🚲

What brings people back to BIKE 5 year after year? 🚴

We recently asked past riders what originally motivated them to sign up for BIKE 5, and the answers say a lot about what this ride has become over the last 10 years.

☀️ Many riders joined to do something fun and active with friends or family.
💙 Others signed up to support safer, more connected communities through Bike/Walk Central Florida’s mission.
🚲 Some were excited to discover new routes and experience Central Florida from a different perspective.
🤝 Others came for networking, team building, personal goals, and the overall experience of riding together.

BIKE 5 has always been about more than miles. It’s about community, connection, and creating memories along the way.

As we gear up for the 10th Annual BIKE 5 this October, we want to know: What motivates YOU to ride BIKE 5 this year? ⬇️

Today, we remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

As many people spend the holiday weekend traveling to visit loved ones, exploring their communities, or enjoying time outdoors, we encourage everyone to look out for one another on our roads, trails, and sidewalks.

Whether you’re walking, biking, rolling, or driving, a little extra patience and awareness can help make this Memorial Day weekend safer for everyone.

Wishing our community a meaningful and safe Memorial Day.

The way our streets, trails, sidewalks, and crossings are designed affects how safely and comfortably people move through their communities every day.

That’s why we’re excited to welcome Mark Suarez, P.E., to the Bike/Walk Central Florida Board of Directors!

For nearly 20 years, Mark has worked on transportation projects across Central Florida focused on improving safety, connectivity, and accessibility for people who walk, bike, and roll. His experience includes Complete Streets projects, trail connectivity, traffic calming, and bike and pedestrian improvements that help make communities more connected and easier to navigate.

As BWCF continues advocating for safer, more connected communities, Mark’s local experience and project expertise will help strengthen our work and support the conversations shaping the future of transportation across the region.
