Find Your Voice (FYV) was conceptualized out of a shared vision of Sisaundra Lewis and Vernice Atkins-Bradley to develop a leadership focused program for middle school girls that would encourage a sense of enthusiasm for the idea of being a leader. Middle school can be a critical time in the life of young girls. They are developing close friendships, gaining some independence, and forming their so

cial circles. The decisions that they make can chart the course of their future. Find Your Voice is designed to be a leadership and mentorship program which engages young girls in activities that align with the vision “to empower girls in finding their voice and identifying their purpose to become impactful everyday leaders.” Find Your Voice utilizes its core values of “V.O.I.C.E. (Value, Overcoming, Integrity, Commitment, and Enthusiasm) to help young girls find their inner strengths and build a sense of identity to have a voice in their families, in their schools and in their communities. FYV will assist in decreasing the achievement gap by supporting young girls through mentorship and the power of sisterhood. In this program, leadership skills will be taught by using a variety of interactive exercises and small group discussions. Participants will examine different renowned leaders’ strategies and styles to gain insights on their own leadership styles. By understanding motives and personal values, participants will be provided with a firm foundation to build the leadership skills that best suit their individual style. The program will strive to help participants develop skills and perspectives, in such a manner, where leadership is viewed as a tool for personal empowerment resulting in greater personal achievements. Research indicates that positive self-esteem in teens helps gives them better control of their lives. Nathaniel Branden, Ph.D., a well-known psychotherapist, defines self-esteem as 'being able to experience oneself as...coping with the challenges of life and of being worthy of happiness.’ In regards to research, FYV will provide young girls a platform to realize their amazing talents and challenge them to become agents for change.
