Yesterday I had the pleasure of holding Kyu Shinsa for an outstanding young man, Tiernan. A bitter sweet day as he leaves us next week to return to College. After four hours, 150 pushups, squats and crunches; kihon; idogeiko; 23 katas; a number of additional tasks; and finally 9 consecutive minutes of Kumite, he earned his yonkyu and joined our dojo board. Well done. Osu!!

Today we celebrate the birth of the Sensei’s Sensei. Shihan Lowe shaped and refined my Kyokushin path. The gratitude I owe him and the Hawaii Branch for my years there can’t be quantified. Osu!

With the passing of Royama Kaicho and Goda Shihan, the legacy of Sosai (and some may disagree) comes closer to its finality. As I look at these two photos, reality hits, so many now gone. Thankfully we still have Oishi and Hasegawa Hanshis, Isobe Shihan, and Matsushima Kancho. Of course there’s some who had moved on from Kyokushin like Ninomiya Kancho and Oyama Saiko Shihan. I am certain I’ve missed a few. But for those of us privileged to have trained during the golden age of Sosai and his protégés, we must be grateful for what they shared with us and vow to continue to absorb from them as much as we can before they are all gone. Osu!
