Why WASH? đź’§

WASH is more than handwashing. It's clean water. Safe toilets. Menstrual hygiene. It's keeping girls in school and building healthy futures.

Every year, more than 500,000 children under age 5 die from preventable diarrheal disease linked to unsafe water and poor sanitation. That's why we exist.

Since 2009, The WASH Foundation has distributed over 116 million bars of soap, trained 154+ educators, reached 19,600+ students, and supported 17+ million people across 27 countries. As a recognized member of the United Nations Global WASH Cluster, we're committed to delivering sustainable solutions that create lasting change.

This is why WASH matters. Watch to learn more about our mission, our vision, and what sets us apart. 👆

We are still beaming from the energy at the 2026 ACI Charity Duck Race. From the sea of creatively decorated ducks to the excitement along the Lazy River, the event captured just how fun doing good together can be.

This highlight reel is a small glimpse of the joy, partnership, and generosity that helped raise 100,000 dollars for The WASH Foundation. Thank you again to ACI, Shell Chemical, our partners, and every supporter who turned a playful race into real impact for families who deserve safe water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Today is World Water Day, and we have some news worth celebrating.

Six primary schools in Tororo, Uganda now have improved water access thanks to The WASH Foundation’s comprehensive WASH project. This February, our partner The Ugandan Water Project installed a new water well and four rainwater collection systems at the final three schools in the project.

That means over 3,300 students and 46 teachers at these three schools now have a safe, reliable water source right on their school grounds.

At the three schools that received improved water access in 2025, the early results are powerful: student enrollment and grades have improved, and water-related illnesses have decreased. Schools now have enough water for sanitary facilities, cooking, and daily hygiene.

For the girls in these communities, this changes everything. They no longer have to walk to distant or unsafe water sources. They can stay in school. They can focus on learning.

Where water flows, equality grows.

Our work in Tororo continues. The next phase brings WASH education in the schools, healthcare facility training, and Menstrual Hygiene Management programs in August 2026.

Students at Magodes Primary School in Tororo, Uganda aren't just benefiting from improved water access. They're helping lead it. As members of their school's WASH club, they're creating awareness around clean water and hygiene, maintaining sanitation, and making sure clean water stays accessible for the whole school community.

This is what community-led impact looks like in practice. The WASH Foundation's comprehensive WASH project in Tororo made it possible.

March 22 is World Water Day, and this year it’s about something deeply personal: water and gender equality.

When clean water is out of reach, it’s women and girls who pay the highest price. They walk for hours, miss school, and face risks that most of us never think about.

The WASH Foundation is working to change that, one school and one community at a time. We’re about to share some big news from our work in Uganda, so keep your eyes on this page.

Want to make a difference right now? Your donation to WASH for All helps provide clean water access, sanitation infrastructure, and hygiene education to communities that need it most.

We are thrilled to share that the 2026 ACI Convention Charity Duck Race raised 100,000 dollars in support of The WASH Foundation in honor of the American Cleaning Institute's 100th anniversary. This incredible generosity helps us expand access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene for communities that need it most.

A special shoutout to the genius behind our Marty McFly duck, Brandon Goldstein, Product Manager, Strategy and Portfolio on Clean the World’s Product Development team. His Back to the Future inspired design brought fun, creativity, and a perfect nod to movie magic as our duck sped down the Lazy River at 88 miles per hour (if only) with dozens of others for a great cause. Great Scott!

We are deeply grateful to ACI, its member companies, Shell, and everyone who adopted a duck, cheered from the sidelines, or helped make this charity race such a powerful moment for The WASH Foundation’s mission. Together, we are improving health and transforming lives, one very fast duck at a time.

In La Altagracia Province in the Dominican Republic, a simple pair of school shoes can change how a child walks into the classroom.

In December, The WASH Foundation’s DR team joined Director Steffani Fields, Deux Mains Rebuild Globally and community leader Doña Rosi from Fundación Mi Casita Linda to source 1,000 pairs of school shoes for children from vulnerable communities. During the first phase, 630 pairs were placed into the hands of students at local schools and ministries, and the remaining shoes were delivered to additional children and organizations in early January.

For these students, having sturdy school shoes means they can arrive safely, feel confident in their uniform, and focus on learning alongside the WASH education and support already taking place in their schools. It is a small change that carries a lot of dignity.

Thank you for being part of this story in the Dominican Republic. To help us reach more children and schools with WASH programs and holistic support, please consider giving to our WASH programs today: https://give.thewashfoundation.org/give/479807/ #!/donation/checkout

Help bring safe water to every classroom in Uganda.

In January, The WASH Foundation drilled a new water well at Ochegen Primary School, bringing safe water within reach for 1,250 students and 15 teachers who previously relied on an unprotected community well. Next, our team will install the hand pump and train a local water user committee to keep the system running for years to come.

This February, four rainwater catchment systems are also being installed at Apuwai and Kallait Primary Schools, serving more than 2,500 students with stored, treated rainwater and school-based filters for safe drinking water. These systems will supplement unreliable or unsafe sources and help ensure students can stay healthy and in school.

Clean water is just the beginning. Next up: WASH-in-Schools and WASH-in-Health Care Facilities trainings that help students, teachers, and healthcare workers turn new infrastructure into lifelong healthy habits.

Big congratulations to our Director of Development, Steffan Davis, who was inducted into the Rotary Club of Orlando on February 5th and proudly received his Rotary pin in a special ceremony!

As the oldest and largest Rotary club in the Central Florida District, this membership opens meaningful opportunities to connect with local business leaders and with Rotary International, an organization that recognizes water and sanitation as one of its six core service areas.

Being part of Rotary helps The WASH Foundation grow new partnerships with community changemakers who share our commitment to service. Together, we’re serving more families, strengthening health and hygiene, and expanding our impact where it matters most.

From our Fresh Start WASH & Wellness team in Orlando, thank you, Hilton for helping our neighbors step into dignity with every shower. Your generous donation of “Travel with Purpose” hygiene kits keeps our mobile shower guests in Central Florida stocked with the essentials they need before they head back out into the community.

Since 2017, this program has provided thousands of private, ADA‑accessible showers and hygiene kits to people experiencing homelessness, while also connecting them to critical services like ID support, health care, and housing resources. Hilton’s continued support helps our trailer stay on the road each week, offering up to 250 showers and a warm welcome at sites across the region.
