Congratulations, Chief Smith!

The Orlando Police Department is proud to share that Chief Eric Smith has once again been named one of Orlando Magazine’s 50 Most Powerful People in Orlando Politics and Government.

Chief Smith has remained focused on reducing violent crime and building strong relationships with the community. Under his leadership, homicides dropped from 40 in 2022 to 10 in 2025, a 75% reduction and the lowest number since OPD began tracking homicides in 1971.

That progress continues in 2026 with a 92% homicide clearance rate, new technology like the Drone as a First Responder program, and more opportunities for residents to connect with OPD through Chief’s Community Meetings, the OPD Community App and youth programs.

This recognition reflects Chief Smith’s continued focus on results, innovation and making Orlando safer.

Congrats Cpl. Plaza!

Please join us in congratulating Corporal Ernie Plaza, the Orlando Police Department’s Officer of the Month for August 2026!

A proud United States Marine veteran, Corporal Plaza served as a deputy with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office before joining OPD in 2018. He works the midnight shift in our South Patrol Division, where he has recovered 15 crime guns this year and made numerous felony arrests. While taking on added supervisory responsibilities, he continues to mentor new officers and help lead his squad.

His recent work included recovering two fi****ms during a traffic stop, identifying a suspect who fled from a stop connected to an illegal street racing event, and coordinating a response that led to the safe apprehension of three suspected poachers. His initiative, investigative skills, and leadership have made a meaningful impact on public safety.

Thank you, Corporal Plaza, for your service to our country and the Orlando community.
