Well said, Chief Smith.

On behalf of the Orlando Police Department, I want to thank State Attorney Monique Worrell and her staff for their hard work in prosecuting this case. I also want to thank the judge and jury for their time and service, as well as the detectives whose thorough investigation helped bring this case to this point.

Our deepest condolences remain with the families of Tyrek Hill and Timothy Schmidt Jr., and with all those who were injured in this tragic shooting.

Lastly, I want to recognize the officers, firefighters, and paramedics who responded that night. We are grateful for their courage, professionalism, and service to our community.

Chief Eric Smith

As students prepare to head back to the classroom, Orlando Police Department's School Resource Officers have been preparing right alongside them.

Throughout the summer, SROs completed specialized training, strengthened their tactical and communication skills, and worked together to ensure they're ready for whatever the new school year may bring.

Chief Eric Smith recently stopped by an SRO training session to thank officers for their commitment to excellence, offer words of encouragement, and recognize the important role they play in keeping students, teachers, and staff safe.

The school year is almost here, and Orlando's SROs are ready to serve.

Support Retired Orlando PD Officer Christopher St. John’s Fight Against Cancer

For more than two decades, Christopher St. John has dedicated his life to protecting others. Now, Chris and his family need our help as he faces one of the most difficult battles of his life.

Chris is a retired Orlando Police Department officer who, after 20 years of honorable service, continued his commitment to the community as an officer with the Oviedo Police Department. He is a devoted husband, a loving father, a loyal friend, and the primary caregiver for a family member who depends on him.

Recently, Chris was diagnosed with throat cancer. As his family tries to process this devastating news, they are also supporting his daughter as she faces serious medical challenges of her own while attending college outside the Orlando area.

Chris is scheduled to undergo surgery in early August 2026. The procedure and recovery are expected to keep him out of work for several weeks. Unfortunately, Chris does not have accrued vacation time available, and his short-term disability benefits will cover only a portion of the family’s regular expenses.

Chris has spent his career answering calls for help and standing beside people during their most difficult moments. This is our opportunity to stand beside him.

Every donation, no matter the amount, will help cover household expenses, medical-related costs, travel, and other financial burdens while Chris is unable to work. Our goal is to give Chris and his family the ability to focus on his treatment, healing, and recovery without the added fear of falling behind financially.

Please consider donating and sharing this fundraiser with your family, friends, and community. Your kindness, prayers, encouragement, and support will mean more to Chris and his family than words can express. Your tax deductable donations to The Orlando Police Heroes Foundation (81-5420631) will go a long way to offsetting the financial burden on the St. John family.

Together, we can remind Chris that he is not facing this battle alone.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Officer Sergio Reyes, our Officer of the Month for June 2026.

Officer Reyes is being recognized for his exceptional investigative work, initiative, and commitment to protecting the MetroWest community. While working in an extra-duty capacity, Officer Reyes encountered a possible suspect connected to a series of indecent exposure incidents involving multiple female victims. When he made contact with the individual, the suspect attempted to flee but was ultimately taken into custody on unrelated charges. Confident he had located the individual responsible, Officer Reyes continued pursuing the investigation.

Working alongside another officer who assisted with follow-up interviews and neighborhood canvassing, Officer Reyes helped identify the suspect responsible for the series of incidents. His persistence, attention to detail, and determination to see the investigation through were instrumental in solving the case, helping address a concerning crime trend in the area and preventing additional victims.

Congratulations, Officer Reyes, and thank you for your outstanding service and dedication to the City of Orlando.
